Interesting to see and good that they are and support vegan business. It isn't clear however how they go about choosing building materials except for the recycling. I like that they offer advice and I assume they would work with a client to meet their ethical requirements. Thanks for posting.

There is so much posturing, spin, and skewing on every side of every issue in today's world, it's almost impossible to be in possession of the facts. that study is a perfect example. If you look under "methods", it says that animal deaths were studied in two categories, direct death for food and in the harvesting of crops. Here is where the spin comes in....very little death occurs in the harvesting of crops, it's the tilling and planting of crops that causes all the death. That's why…

That's why these studies all use the word "harvest", and never planting, production, or tilling. One reason spin can be administered so often is that people today are so disconnected from where their food comes from, their only knowledge of it what they read about or see on a youtube video. They don't see things in real life, with their own eyes. That old cliche of "The truth lies in the middle" was never more appropraite as it is today. This video demonstrates the animal death that occurs in tillage and planting, the harvesting machinery never breaks the soil, so naturally there is little harm there.

I hate the fact that everyone on all sides of every issue known to man is so selfish that they can't show everything and show all sides when they discuss an issue. Even when studies are presented, what the study "shows" does not tell as much as what the study "does not" show.

Kerry Baker said:

One of the criticisms about the vegan diet that regularly gets rolled out is the original study cited in the article that later was shown to use the wrong data. It's pretty much impossible to live a pure vegan life but we can try to make sure how we live is the least harmful way. Even the Jains rely on people giving them food to survive which brings in the same issues. Personally I think the way to go is for people to grow their own food as much as possible, then buy locally and then look at imported food. Housing I think go solar although I'm not sure if there are fatalities with solar. As a wildlife rescuer I have picked up a female ringtail possum whose front paws were charred stumps from contacting electrical wires, it was hideous. So anything we can do to reduce that sort of impact on wildlife will be all good.

To be completely honest, I think we're sorta at a point right now where we kinda need to just round up every animal and put them in this protected un-developed area where they can live away from the human world... perhaps we can have food deposit areas, but until something like that happens, I don't know what else to do... How about donating australia to the animals LOL?

Hi Jacob

I think also need to look at alternatives like straw bale homes, shipping container homes, mud brick homes, to see what their environmental effects and components are. Plaster also often uses hair as a binder.

One of the criticisms about being vegan is the number of animals killed through commercial harvesting.
As far as Vegan (non-food) materials, I don't have much experience with this yet, but just looking through home depot's site, none of their products seemed to be labeled with what their made of... For example:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/SnapStone-Raincloud-Gray-9-lb-Urethane-Flexible-Grout-11-205-02-01/204508681#specifications

Doesn't give a comprehensive description of what materials go into making it and after a quick google search, grout usually has cement as one of it's constituent materials, and cement kilns are sometimes constructed with animal bone... I know I'm not going to be making a kiln in my bathroom, but who knows what else uses animal bone... I would just feel better if I knew what materials went into making these products...

We should come up with a list of generic products (like: paint, lumber, grout, etc) that we feel are in need of further investigation.

I'll start:

Grout

Paint

Glue

Exterior Wood Finish's (though I've found a Vegan company that manufactures indoor wood finish's)

I understood that the businesses registered with this site had to apply. As it is yet to launch it's a bit hard to see exactly what is there. It has been designed for the vegan community, so I am hopeful it will turn out to be a useful resource. With regard to no-food products, given that this is a vegan site there will be obvious criteria that apply to be able to make product claims. With regard to no-food products, given that this is a vegan site there will be obvious criteria that apply to be able to make product claims. Consumer laws in most countries covering what can and can't be claimed offer some protection. And I think the owners of the site will quickly get feedback should consumers see something that is falsely claiming to be vegan. I'm interested to see what is listed when it does launch.
