Fighting for animal liberation and an end to speciesism

Dutch scientists have used stem cells to create strips of muscle tissue with the aim of producing the first lab-grown hamburger later this year.
The aim of the research is to develop a more efficient way of producing meat than rearing animals.

"He said that in conversations with the Dutch Society of Vegetarians, the chairman estimated half its members would start to eat meat if he could guarantee that it cost fewer animal lives."
This is quite an interesting observation. I guess it won't matter to people that the lab-grown meat originally came from a dead animal. What does it say about people's understanding of vegetarianism/veganism if they would start eating lab-grown meat? Do the comments above reflect the fact that it is a society of vegetarians and not of vegans?

Permalink Reply by Rachel Hickey on February 22, 2012 at 6:21 Ok feeling a bit stupid now. I had overestimated science and assumed that no-one's body was involved at any stage of this. I had assumed that the 'meat' was manufactured right from the start. Once I'd read the above and realised that it is merely a form of cloning and that someones body had to be used at some point I tried to relocate comments I'd made earlier in Facebook. Aghhhhhhh
Of course I couldn't support a thing like that. Perhaps the Dutch veg rep is assuming that half of his members are as dumb as me. :s
