Abstract

This paper is focused on the transformation of animal cognition in to animal studies. Is briefly discussed the specificity of both disciplines and the ethical importance of this transformation.

Key Words: Animal Cognition; Animal Studies; Antispeciesism.

Antispeciesism?

Well, yes: the word ‘antispeciesism’ does exist. Since 1975, when Peter Singer’s Animal Liberation was published (Singer 1995), many things have changed. Not too many, unfortunately. The purpose of these pages is to highlight the principles and parameters of a transformation: that of animal cognition into animal studies. It is not that there are no more analyses linked to animal cognition, on the contrary: they are important, within certain non invasive limits on which we shall dwell later, and it is fundamental that they do not cease to exist. Nonetheless, in a completely original way, we witness a change of route (a conceptual one, of course) that finds its main principle not so much in the observation of the animal Other (as done by ethologists), but rather in the acknowledgment that it is the animal Other the one who can watch us: we move from observers to the observed.

Let us start from a meaningful fact: year after year billions of non-human animals are slaughtered for several reasons: nutrition, clothing, research and fun (Caffo 2012. Chapter. 1). Antispeciesism, from Singer onwards, has been a theoretical and practical movement of opposition to this state of things. Not all ways of opposition, though, are the same. We can morally oppose speciesism (this practice of discrimination between species) by facing it from an ethical perspective, just like Singer, Tom Regan (Regan 2004) and many other philosophers (Zamir 2007. Chapter. 1), or we can contest it, following the example of many other authors (consider Nibert 2002), by pointing the finger at the political structure of our society that turns animals into the foundation of oppression (Maurizi 2011).This diversity of aims has got a determining role in shaping antispeciesism both as a philosophical theory and as a political movement that fights for, and demands, animal freedom. Before going into the depth of this distinction, it is appropriate – without going off track – to say something about this new way of studying no more animals, but animality as a theoretical entity.

From animal cognition …

Animal cognition (Vauclair 1996) is the discipline that studies, through observation, experimentation and theoretical reflection, the cognitive capacities of non-human animals (mental life, language, etc.) As mentioned, non-human animals (from now on I shall use ‘animals’ in order to refer to all animals apart from the species of Homo Sapiens) are object of several discriminations that are meant to satisfy human needs and passions. One way to resist a demand for animals’ rights (not in a legal sense: contemporary antispeciesism rejects the animals’ integration in jurisprudence because of its scepticism towards the very concept of jurisprudence) has consisted in arguing that animals are lacking in certain human features that make animal existence ‘noble’ and worth living. We might detect, to perpetrate a classical philosophical topos, some distinguished figures who are responsible for this: Renè Descartes (animals as automatons), Peter Carruthers (animals compared to ‘intelligent’ missiles), Roger Scruton (animals excluded from morals through lame jokes, along with the exaltation of hunting as a noble sport), etc.

Firstly, a typical contention is that animals do not possess a complex mental life, do not produce articulated thoughts and do not speak. Many of the philosophical debates surrounding this reveal at least two notable mistakes: (1) a great ignorance with regards to animals; (2) the fallacy that locates moral qualities into bodily features. Upon (2) we should discuss at length, being a primordial argumentative strategy of antispeciesism based on this very fallacy: that of finding ‘human capacities’ in animals and of introducing them, as lego pieces, into the conventional boundaries of ‘subjects of life’. As I said, we shall dwell on this, as required, later. About (1), instead, we should perhaps speak straight away. Firstly, when speaking of animals, one often does it in an approximate way, starting from the very language one uses. The word ‘animal’, as the French philosopher Jacques Derrida (2008) noted, turns out to be a huge conceptual trap. From a technical point of view, with the term ‘animal’ we should intend the whole of all animal species present in nature: from that of Diomedea exulans to that, so dear to us, of Homo Sapiens. To discriminate, but also just to discuss animals in a general way, is like deciding to duel with the mist. To say “animals do not think”, or discussing “animals as speechless automatons”, means absolutely nothing unless – and this is impossible given the enormous variety of animal species, many of which still unknown – we could list all existing animals, excluding humans, and demonstrate what we are positing. Therefore, even on a merely linguistic level, the criticism to (1) is that it is obsolete: we do not know which animals we are talking about and, moreover, following once again Derrida, we are operating an “ontological compression” on the endless diversity of animals towards the total uniformation of the generic term ‘animal’. But for Descartes, Carruthers, and other colleagues, the trouble is not over: there are many animals who can do what these philosophers claim as only human.

When speaking of language, there are bees and their waggle dance (the studies on which led to the retirement of Nobel prize winner Karl von Frisch), talking monkeys from Washoe (a chimpanzee who is expert of ASL: American Sign Language) to Kanzi (a bonobo that would playfully communicate through its complex lexigram keyboard); when speaking of mental life, there are Koko [a talkative gorilla who loved staring at herself in the mirror gorilla and cooking pasta with the ethologist Francine Patterson (Patterson & Linden 1981)] or the whales’ solemn songs – containing syntactically structured sounds – aimed at organising a discreet quantity of information that seems to influence the whales’ behaviour, as if warned about some kind of danger by their fellow-specimen – which attributes, therefore, according to authoritative hypotheses, a mental state to the recipient of the message. (Mark that, we could carry on ad infinitum.) It seems obvious to the point of idiocy to state that animals are not endowed with extraordinary qualities.

Every individual, as representative of a species, unless affected by malformations or some other defect, bears a number of features that are only to be added to her personal sphere that, being unique and unrepeatable, gets all the more complex and rich. Furthermore, it is not clear why language or mental life should be the distinctive traits of morals. Or maybe it is clear, but philosophically embarrassing: one observes some (supposedly, as we have shown) only human abilities and elevates them to the status of conditio sine qua non of ethics in order to exclude, in a tautological way, animals from the moral sphere. This would naturally lead to the discussion on (2), but I think it matters to stay a little longer on this issue, first.

Each species (if we accept the notion of ‘species’ to begin with) is a massive container of lives that are all amazing for their uniqueness. An albatross can fly for ten years without rest, sleeping while flying, never landing, switching off the two parts of his brain at turns; the nine-stripe armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) is the mammal with the longest penis, enough to become (unwillingly) the world leader in the research on the function of the penis in mammals; beavers can pull down huge trees in less than an hour and are amazing fishers, so much that they do this (dirty) job for Canadian stretchers; octopuses are incredible mimes, often pretending to be different animals such as snakes, cobra fish and scorpions (but also seaweeds and coconuts). Without carrying on in a stereotyped list, it seems obvious that many animals do things that others (man included) do not and cannot do. Why should my ability to think (theory of the mind of superior order) be morally more relevant than the armadillos’ long penis or than the albatross’ sleepy and enchanted flight? The answer to this question leads us to finally address (2): the fallacy that locates moral qualities in bodily features.

To animal studies …

There are no good arguments for situating the epicentre of morality in the human mind rather than the octopus’ mimesis. Nevertheless, as we have briefly discussed, many philosophers have made of human – mental and bodily – qualities the borderline of ethics: either you can do the things man does, or let us not speak of you, but look, and pass. It is exactly here, in that ‘can do’ that we can locate a typical, and inevitable, criticism of (2). If it does not suffice to be human (as posited by many authors as, for instance, the renowned contractist John Rawls, whose point was interpreted in an antispeciesist key by Rowlands 2009) to be moral subjects, but a capacity to use (and therefore to possess) certain abilities is required, then some problems arise, problems that lead to the first criticism to speciesism – we shall return on this in more detail later - by Peter Singer or Tom Regan.

Not everyone who belongs to the species of Homo Sapiens, in fact, is capable of an articulated and complex language nor, if we continue along the lines traced by specist philosophers, do they possess a theory of the mind of superior order. Autistic people, for instance, are suffering from a pathology characterised by a marked decrease of the social-communicative integration and what now seems to be the more likely hypothesis, one that tries to justify this deficit, is that autistic people do not have a theory of the mind: that is to say, they do not represent the mental state of others; a particular semantic deficit for the category of mental states, namely a lack in the metarepresentative capability (to represent representations). As for language, on the other hand, think of people with aphasia (an alteration of language due to damages to the brain areas assigned to it) of Broca (agrammatism) or Wernicke (deficit of linguistic comprehension). Were those capabilities truly the ones that can justify the moral consideration towards the species of Homo Sapiens, and the non-consideration towards every other species, then Descartes’ argument – and that of his followers – would turn out to be a boomerang: humans, too, can lack these abilities (as in the case of aphasic or autistic people) and can therefore be excluded by the sphere of ethics, whereas marvelous animals such as Koko, Kanzi and Washoe would be included, thus disturbing (once again) the fragility of the word ‘animal’ – this has been the aim of Peter Singer’s and Paola Cavalieri’s Great Ape Project (Cavalieri & Singer 1993). [For those who discriminate animals, this conclusion is unacceptable: it is from this rejection that Peter Singers moves when making of pain the centre of his animalist ethics. With the acknowledgment that ‘the cognitive soil’ is fragile like a crystal glass, when we claim to discuss ethics (human or animal) we give way to the slow and ongoing transition from animal cognition to animal studies. Whereas the analysis of animal cognition comprised only the studies concerning animal cognitive abilities, the so called animal studies aim at a theoretically vast study, one that is not reducible to a single discipline and/or perspective of animality as a fundamental theoretical entity within philosophical debate.

We used to not leaflet for the environmental reasons but a lot of people still prefer to have something that they can hold, some people don’t have access to online materials, and leafleting is still a very effective way to spread the vegan message in quite an easy way. Fill a bag with vegan brochures and hand them out the next time you’re in the City or at the train station or somewhere with a high traffic area.

The reason I changed my mind with my views on leafleting was after I found out that Nathan Runkle had gone vegan from a “Why Vegan?” leaflet he was given. Nathan has gone on to form Mercy for Animals and they have done so much that I think is great vegan outreach, especially in regards to their undercover work and the “Farm to Fridge” campaign. If I/Green Earth Group can inspire one person to be vegan who ends up doing even half of what Nathan has done, then that’s grand and that’s why I support leafleting.

Not to be ageist, but for those who are over 55 a large percentage of them do not have access to email, the Internet or mobile devices. But most importantly, they do not WANT to have access to them. So obviously the print medium still works for people like this, but it is fast slowing down. The print vs online dilemma is an ongoing issue for many groups and businesses.

Politics

I support anyone who is using their skills and expertise to help the animals and market veganism more into the mainstream. Teachers who provide a positive example of veganism to their students, Lawyers who are working with legislations that exists and Politicians who are trying to create new legislations that better help our animal friends. I personally support MPs and Senators who are involved in the community and who I’ve seen get their hand dirty on a variety of issues from various groups in the community. So, someone who will benefit the community, who has proven over time that they help the community, who’s in the game to give back to the community and not for the acclaim, then yes, I would support them. Not just because they are vegan.

As an Independent candidate, it’s quite hard to get into the Senate without major Party support and the preference deals Parties are able to make. In case my overseas friends don’t know, Australian people vote for Parties not People. Plus a candidate would need solid Networks across the State and a huge campaigning budget. Even some high-profile Queenslanders would have a hard time getting the 300 000 votes needed to get a seat in the Senate. Most Independents get about 15 000 or less.

Also, though I commend the paperless campaign goal, the majority of voters have no idea until they get to the voting booths who they will actually vote for – until they get that piece of campaign material. From a marketing perspective, the paperless campaign also depends on your target demographic. Not everyone has access to the Internet, emails or mobile devices – or wants to eg many people over 55. Good luck and great question!

A lot of vegans and Animal Rights Activists don’t tend to work well with/in other movements. I know a lot of vegans who don’t want to be associated with the “hippy” culture of the environmental movement. I know a lot of environmental people who don’t want to be associated with the “anarchists”, “health freaks” and/or antagonists in the vegan movement. I think the mainstream public sees a lot of these movements as similar if not the same due to (if nothing else) the going against the grain of the mainstream views. Sometimes it’s hard to be involved in other groups and open up to other ways of thinking, but I do think it’s essential to move forward, as in my opinion they’re all connected.

Now, the question: It may be old news now, but some time ago there was quite a furore in Australia over the slaughter of Australian cows in Indonesia. What good, if any, for other animals has come about as a result of all the news coverage and publicity, and do you support Animals Australia and the RSPCA’s campaign to end this live export and send frozen bodies overseas instead?

This was a massive media event in Australia. The day after this programme was screened on our free to air TV station, the most popular hashtag (#) on Twitter was related to live trade. Letters pages in newspapers, talkback radio stations and even our parliament were in overdrive.

The programme was even repeated a few days after for those who had missed it the first time.

Animals Australia created the media event based around their own content (the footage) and then utilised their websites and information online to further educate people about the matter.

The advertising afterwards by Animals Australia and RSPCA targeted our Prime Minister, Julia Gillard and used this as a lobbying tool, which got her attention. It caused a LOT of havoc for the livestock industry. A lot of people shared this programme and the information. A lot of people spoke about something they knew nothing about before. A lot of people cared about this issue and I saw a lot of people on Social Media websites say they were now vegan.

Groups need to get their topic into the public eye. Animals Australia did this. Once something relating to the use and abuse of our animal friends is in the public eye, it’s up to every one of us to use this to argue our facts about veganism and promote the changes we so desperately need.

Thanks, Billy. I agree LC, I think Patty Mark and ALV are amazing too! This is a question from an ARZone member: As a feminist vegan, how would you compare the effectiveness, in terms of impact and notice ability, of your outreach events when compared to the stunts such as PeTA’s lettuce ladies, their new XXX adult site and other such tactics from PeTA?

I guess it depends on your target audience and on what you're trying to promote. I prefer outreach, advertising and videos more about the Cause not the Conversation. Most people know that sexism sells in our mainstream society. But I do prefer tactics that are classy, clever and don’t push one cause over other causes.

I do know that PETA sends out a huge amount of vegan information due to people who visit their websites. I do hope that the people who they are trying to target get the right message. I'm personally unsure of what it is a lot of times... Maybe it's: The more offensive, the higher probability there is of something going viral. Maybe. Is it okay to me? No. I don't really like to compare anything or anyone as I don't think that helps. But, I guess when our Green Earth Group volunteers dressed up as animals and I was Bo Peep for World Farm Animal Day, there was a lot more interaction than simply just handing out brochures.

I really wanted to link the gorgeous photos of the animals with basic facts relating to humans and a call to action. eg. a photo of a pig would have “Pigs are very similar to dogs as they are incredibly intelligent, friendly and loyal.” And “Love us by not Eating Us” and they are also t-shirts: http://skreened.com/vivalavegan Clothing Outreach is also very effective - just ask our friend Gary Smith!

For those on tight budgets, will they continue doing what they are doing, basically robbing Peter to pay Paul, by going without in other areas.

I definitely agree that large businesses/industries should pay for "balancing" somewhat the destruction they create. Is this going to be effective though?

At present the media seems to be focused on scare tactics to put people off a serious debate without emotions involved. It's the "hippy" greenies –vs- the "real" workers and I don't think that helps at all. I'm really worried for my State of Queensland after our last election. Our new Premier is quite intent on destroying almost all of the great environmental habitats - that are great for tourism - at the expense of industry. It's very concerning. I personally don't think that the industries and the big corporations who cause the most destruction and emissions will be affected. I'd like to see how it will realistically change for average people. Time will tell I guess.

I think a lot of us know that by changing to a vegan diet and lifestyle that we can help the environment a lot more than the other things we're told to do: use less water when you shower, change your light globes for more energy efficient ones etc. But it's a hard one. I think you need to focus on the purse strings.

The show is a testament to the naivety of supporters of the messy business of animal welfare who always appear to hope for the best and end up with the worst of scenarios.

In this case, the assumed and claimed “promise” of Proposition 2 – cage-free facilities and the “banning” of the battery cage – has been betrayed and, instead, a system of enriched cages and enriched colonies will be introduced. Karen Davis explained that she herself had given a guarded welcome to Proposition 2 (which should be enacted in 2015) while Bob Linden said he always thought little would come of it.

One of the features that led animal advocates to believe that Proposition 2 – which was entitled “the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act” – would necessarily result in the provision of cage-free facilities was the stipulation that hens must be able to spread their limbs, turn around, and sit down not touching either other hens or the sides of a cage or enclosure. It turns out, however, that this provision is not intended to apply to all the birds at the same time – rather, it may simply apply to one bird at a time - and they may therefore have to “take turns” to stretch and move. This seemed to shock Davis – the sneakiness of it – although Proposition 2 never actually stated that cages would be banned, it was just assumed that this would be the result.

However, these sorts of claims have been a feature of the claims-making of the battery hen industry in Britain for years. For example, when animal advocates complained that birds in what we now seem to be compelled to call conventional battery cages could not stretch either their wings or legs, industry spokespersons would suggest that they could indeed stretch - one limb at a time, and by adjusting their position inside the cage in order to do so.

This, of course, is the language of the exploiter and the abuser, for it is attempting to justify a totally oppressive system, one which Proposition 2, like all messy welfare measures, is designed to tidy up.

Another feature of Bob Linden's Feb 12th show is his continued opposition to the Humane Society of the United States, which he believes has misled and conned sections of the animal advocacy movement. Linden has made this claim for quite a while now, although there seems to be little substance to it. In fact, he does not help his own position by continuing to falsely call the HSUS an animal rights group, which they certainly are not, and specifically state that they are not.

When I asked Bob about this on FB, he suggested that the HSUS will cosy up to all sorts of animal advocates when it suits them and, often, animal rights supporters have been given the view that the HSUS is a supporter of the philosophy of animal rights. In my view, this simply underlines once more the careless, and deliberate, philosophical mess at the heart of the animal advocacy movement in which virtually anything "for the animals" may be characterised as animal rights. I would dearly love that this would change, and organisations who care nothing of rights, like PeTA for example, would stop using the name.

However, I do not expect the situation will change any time soon - just as I'm sure that animal advocates will continue to involve themselves in the messy business of trying to regulate atrocities in the name of "doing something now" and not being "passive."

Animal Rights Zone (ARZone) exists to engage with guests and their ideas about human-nonhuman relations, therefore, a statement of ARZone’s methodology is appropriate. It is important to recognize at the outset that ARZone is constantly evolving, and while it’s guiding principles will not change, the specific methods it uses while adhering to and forwarding those principles surely will. ARZone is always seeking to improve.

ARZone hosts weekly Question and Answer sessions with a variety of people who are connected in some way to issues surrounding human-nonhuman relations. Many of these guests are writers and thinkers within the animal advocacy movement, some prominent, some not. Many guests are grassroots advocates and activists. Some guests are connected to animal advocacy because of their work in conservation or the environment. Some are filmmakers and authors. Some are even involved in industries or ventures which exploit other animals.

In order to try to understand the various positions these varied guests hold, ARZone submits to them, in advance, a series of questions, perhaps as many as 12 to 15, for them to answer. The guest receives these pre-registered questions 48 hours prior to the live Q&A session, giving them ample time to think of and compose their best answers. ARZone then presents the questions to the guest, and the guest presents their answers in the live Q&A sessions held weekly. Members are able to ask follow-up questions, both to the pre-registered questions and later in the more informal second part of the live session following the completion of the pre-registered Q&A. Anyone can submit a question for any guest, and everyone is encouraged to do so, whether that question is to be included with the pre-registered questions, or as part of the informal open session.

ARZone is an animal rights and anti-speciesist social network and it is the official stance of ARZone that other animals cannot properly be considered the property of others, and that all use of other animals as things and commodities is wrong. ARZone believes that veganism - that is, a life which rejects as far as is possible all use of other animals - is a moral imperative. Not all guests and members share these views, or share them to the same degree. This raises an important and vital question:

In the questioning of guests, particularly those who hold views contrary to ARZone’s, how strongly or aggressively should be the questioning?

One’s first impulse is to say that the questioning of guests should be as forceful as possible to show what ARZone perceives to be the obvious failures in some guest’s views. One might be tempted to think that unless a guest is aggressively challenged, ARZone members will not be able to reason for themselves what could be the problems with the guest’s views. Therefore, on this view, ARZone ought to conduct the Q&A session as would a lawyer conduct an interrogation of a witness in a courtroom, employing an adversarial style. While this method has it’s appeal, would it lead to a greater understanding of the views of others? Would it encourage people who don’t already agree with ARZone to dialog with us and our membership? Can we change the hearts and minds of people we treat as hostile witnesses?

In the courtroom setting, a strident approach towards witnesses works because the witnesses are compelled to answer, they are in a court of law. In ARZone our guests are our GUESTS and their participation is voluntary, and they cannot be compelled to answer any questions, to stay for any length of time, or to even appear at all. If all ARZone wishes to do is assail the views of those it disagrees with, or insist upon the superiority of it’s own views, it needn’t invite guests to the site at all. If those were the goals of ARZone, they could be better achieved in a private forum, where all the members agreed and accepted ARZone’s views upfront and without question. Perhaps there is a need for such a forum, but that is not ARZone’s role, and it will not be it’s methodology.

ARZone is interested in hearing the opinions, viewpoints and positions of a wide variety of people from all walks of life. ARZone will ask the toughest questions, and closely examine the answers given to them, to the best of it’s ability. That won’t satisfy everyone, and there will be occasions where ARZone fails, but better to risk disappointing others and failure than to give up trying.

As it goes forward, ARZone is considering news ways to engage with guests, and new ways to examine and critique their views. ARZone is also continually seeking to increase the involvement of it’s membership in all of it’s endeavors. A social network will only be as successful as it’s membership makes it. ARZone welcomes any constructive criticism, thoughts and ideas on how to better fulfill it’s mission to increase our awareness, through rational discourse, of our moral obligations to all sentient beings.
