I spoke with Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's Scott West while he was on location at Bonneville Dam. There is something that we can all do to aid him in this campaign. See for yourself!

Holise: You were in law enforcement. What did you do and how has it contributed to the work that you now do in Sea Shepherd?

Scott: I started law enforcement in the summer of 1987. I was hired as a criminal investigator with U.S. Customs Service and I was sent down to South Carolina where I was involved with the interdiction of drugs being imported into the United States. Then I started doing some work in the control of export technologies. I also, at the same time, was in the Naval Reserve as an intelligence officer and so the export control and my intelligence work kind of duct-taped together.

After a couple of years I decided that law enforcement wasn't really my thing. It was something I had done out of grad school, and I needed a job. Eventually I realized I wanted to do environmental work and so I decided to go to law school. Well, a friend of mine said that the E.P.A. had criminal investigators so I gave EPA a call and, lo and behold, I got hired in late 1989 as a special agent criminal investigator with the EPA and moved to San Francisco and started working. I said, "I'll give it six months for an experiment. For what that's worth, if it doesn't work out I'll go to law school."

At the end of 2008 --- that was nineteen years later --- I retired from the EPA Criminal Investigations and I was a Special Agent In Charge when I retired. Special Agent In Charge is a person who runs a geographically centered office and supervises the investigators, scientists, attorneys, admin people and is the one who makes the decision about which cases will get investigated and referred for prosecution. So, my background is environmental law enforcement and Naval Intelligence and those two things are what I bring to the table for Sea Shepherd.

I first became aware of Sea Shepherd back about '88 and, sometime during 1990, I had the opportunity to meet Paul Watson. Sea Shepherd was headquartered down in the L.A. area at the time and I was in San Francisco. California was in my area and I thought Paul might be a good source of information about environmental violations in U.S. territory. So I called him up, told him who I was and that I wanted to talk with him and he said, "Come on down." He thought that what I did for a living was pretty interesting and so we started talking and as the years unfolded we developed a friendship.

In 2008, he called me up and reminded me that I could retire; although, I had not been planning on it. And he said, "Come on, retire! Let's put your skills to work for Sea Shepherd." So, I did and that's how my background fits into what I'm doing now. I run Sea Shepherd's Intelligence and Investigations branch. I've been leading the ongoing campaign in Taiji, Japan, I did the undercover part at the Faroe's campaign last year, I've done some investigations around the world and now I'm down at the sea lion defense campaign. I bring my law enforcement to bear because I know how the law works, and I'm able to talk to law enforcement officers here, in Japan and anywhere I go. That's how it all comes together.

Holise: Wow! That's incredible. Let me ask you, how do you deal with the stress of witnessing the torture and murder of sentient cetaceans over and over again?

Scott: Not very well! [Laughs nervously]

It's extremely difficult for anybody to watch or anybody who gives a damn. I mean, certainly the people who are doing it don't have trouble watching it. But for me it's particularly difficult because, for twenty-one years, as a federal agent I'd see a problem, I'd walk into the middle of it and stop it. Not being able to do that in Taiji or do it here at the Dam is extremely difficult. I internalize a lot of it which isn't healthy, but otherwise I'd be a madman or my anger would get the best of me and I'd end up hurting someone or going to jail. That's not good for the cause, so I have to keep it in perspective that we're not going to win these battles overnight. It's going to be a long process. A lot of animals are going to suffer and die in the process but ultimately it will be a part of the victory.

Holise: What advice would you have for anyone who wants to engage in a Sea Shepherd campaign?

Scott: It used to be much easier getting onto one of the ships' crews prior to the popularity of Whale Wars. Now it's much harder because there are a lot more people aware of it and wanting to do it. There are particular skill sets that are badly needed on the ships. I'd say, learn how to weld. Learn to be a goodwelder. That would give you a step up. And be persistent!

Also, look at some of these other campaigns that we're doing now, not just Antarctica. We have the Blue Rage in the Mediterranean. We have work in the Galapagos. We have the Cove Guardian campaign in Taiji. We have this one that just started, this Dam Guardian which will only last a couple more weeks.

But there are opportunities around, also to become an onshore volunteer and become known because we'd much rather put someone on our ships that we know than put on a complete stranger. For people who are interested, get involved in however you can.

Holise: Excellent! And right now, obviously there are some openings at the dam?

Scott: Oh, yeah! All somebody has to do is write to damguardian@seashepherd.org and I'll respond with an application package. It's not that hard to get approved. I just need to know who's down here wearing Sea Shepherd colors.

Holise: Right!

Scott: You have waivers to sign. It's the onshore application. It tends to turn off a lot of people but those are probably folks that we don't want representing us anyway.

Holise: Is there anything going on right now at the dam?

Scott: Well, there are sea lions in the water. The traps are open and set but they have to be manually dropped. There were some guys out hazing the sea lions but there haven't been any trapped in a couple of days. We also have volunteer in Astoria, which is on the coast. The dam is located about a hundred and forty river miles inland. The sea lions get pulled out from the trapped areas in Astoria where they get branded. Then they get poked and prodded for research.

Holise: God! That's horrible.

Scott: It looks like at least for right now, it's a little after 7 in the morning here on Thursday morning, it doesn't look like any sea lions here are in jeopardy.

Holise:Okay. So, let's take someone like me for example. I'm not able to go there. What can I do?

Scott: You can certainly help spread the word. We now have a Twitter for Dam Guardians. You can pay attention to that. If we report that animals are in the traps, then we encourage everyone to pick up their phones and call the governors of Washington and Oregon. It's the states that are doing this, primarily the state of Oregon, with permission from NOAA to kill these animals that are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. I'm sure the governors of these states don't want to be seen as sea lion killers, but that's what they areand they need to be told that.

The Humane Society has done quite a bit of work over the past several years through the courts. They have been successful for the most part in preventing this from happening but they were unsuccessful recently in court proceedings with the injunction that hey asked for. But the judge limited the numbers that could be killed this year and there's another hearing in U.S. District Court on the 15th. So you need to follow that and support the Humane Society and their legal acts.

Act Now!

Angela Casey is a third grade school teacher at Lafayette Elementary in San Francisco, California. Being neighbors to the Pacific ocean, she and her students are heavily engaged in maritime education. They discuss the plight of our seas and the issues that pertain to its inhabitants: ranging from pollution, family values of dolphins and orcas to the unethical practice of marine mammal captivity.

As a class project, the children were doing reports on their favorite marine animals --- several of which were sea lions --- when she heard about the travesty of the sea lions who visit Bonneville Dam. Angela said:

"I learned of the Bonneville Sea Lions last month via Save Misty, and have been making my own calls, writing emails, signing petitions, feeling sad & helpless. Not only is this happening in Taiji, the Faroes, etc., but now it is happening on my doorstep!"

Humans have taken so many Chinook salmon from the Columbia River, that they have become endangered. Instead of calling a halt to the excessive fishing, they decided to eliminate the competition: sea lions.

"In San Francisco, we love our sea lions. They have been a tourist attraction at Pier 39 in Fisherman's wharf since the 80's. We have the Marine Mammal Center that rescues and rehabilitates sea lions . . . only to have them swim up to the Columbia to be branded, trapped and killed for eating. Thus, the kids know these animals."

Angela Casey said that she now has 131 pictures, some of which were downloaded from the Save Misty the Dolphin's page, How Kids Can Help Save the Bonneville Sea Lions. Many of the drawings have letters on the back of them wherein the children are asking that the sea lions' lives be spared. She said that she also has more than forty separate letters, as well.

"I saw the post last weekend about getting kids to color the pic. I discussed the situation with the students and they wanted to help. I thought we'd send off those pictures to Oregon and Washington, and that would be it.

"Then, the students wanted to present to the second grades...other teachers noticed what we were doing and asked them to present to their class. At that point, I decided to invite all teachers so my kids have been going around and presenting all week to K-4th grades. It just sort of snowballed. We still have more classes to present to and if all participate, I could expect at least 100 more drawings.

"Cat Jones from Sea Lion Defense Brigade contacted me and asked if the kids could name the branded sea lions. She sent us photos and they named them (you can see that image on the SLDB fb page). We now use the pics of our named sea lions in our presentations.

"The kids have been offering their solutions to the problem:

"'Let the sea lions be, and stop fishing . . . or fish less.'

"I"m trying to document everything they are saying, as it is very powerful and brings me to tears. I even made a mom tear up when I told her all of that, and that her son . . . sitting at his desk, drawing his sea lion, hearing the positive response from all of the online communities, said: 'Ms. Casey, I really think this is going to make a difference!'

"At the beginning of the year, many of my students felt they didn't know what to do to help the ocean. We shared how we felt yesterday and they feel "Happy" and that they are 'doing something good.' One dynamic 8-year-old said, 'I feel I can change the world!' Kids usually feel pretty powerless in our society and adults usually don't help this with all of our rules and impositions, 'Do this, don't do that, you can't . . . ' These kids are empowered and inspired and they are inspiring others . . . including me! I'm amazed, in awe and extremely proud of my students."

by the Barbi Twins

Warden forbids guards saving kittens after mom was trapped and killed.

Warden says it’s “none of your concern.”

Please call prison at (254) 865-8431 and urge them to allow kittens to be saved after mom was murdered!

Update: from fb page KathysKitties
1. CALL! Please call 936.437.6318 and POLITELY ask Mr. William Stephens (Deputy Director, Prison & Jail Operations) to urge the Gatesville warden to stop killing TNR cats, and work with the numerous TX animal groups offering to help with Trap-Neuter-Return, adoption of friendly cats/kittens. Fleas are easily treated by sprinkling flea powder on lounging/sleeping areas. Again, be POLITE to Mr. Stephens, he is NOT the warden, but we’re asking him to talk to her about this senseless killing.

2. EMAIL! Write Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott: greg.abbott@texasattorneygeneral.gov Ask him to please investigate animal cruelty charges against Gatesville warden Loretta Carmona, to include leaving cats in traps during the severe storms/hail/flooding last Monday night. Guards are documenting cats being left in traps and exposed to the elements without food/water for 18+ hours. Newborn kittens left to starve (see below), intimidating employees who try to help, threats of discriminatory action for speaking out against the warden’s animal cruelty.

3. CALL Gatesville Animal Control 254-865-2226 ask them to stop wasting taxpayer dollars when area animal groups have offered to help the Gatesville prison unit with no-cost Trap-Neuter-Return. Ask them to please check for microchips before destroying the cats, and please let rescue groups pull the eartipped TNR cats at no charge.

4. CALL WARDEN CARMONA at 254-865-8431 and urge her to work with local animal groups that have offered their help, free of charge to the prison, to TNR the remaining cats at no cost to the prison, rehome the friendlier cats, and find homes for the kittens. Remind her that flea issues can be resolved without killing the cats. Tell her she is wasting taxpayer dollars, and the public will not stand for her senseless killing of cats. It’s bad for the prison’s image in Central Texas, and we know what she’s doing!!!
Heroes of CyberWhaleWarrior.comtag:arzone.ning.com,2012-03-27:4715978:BlogPost:885072012-03-27T17:30:00.000ZHolise E.
It’s no wonder that Hunter Shaffer’s dream is to swim in the ocean. He loves the inhabitants.

At the age of seven, he started to research fish. Having his own aquarium, he wanted to see that his little friends were well taken care of. As time wore on, he became well versed in aquatic nature. By the time he was 9, he was educating others on natural habitats and the ideal conditions for finned pets.

His online ventures gained him many friends and acquaintances. When he was nearly 11 years old, a biochemist at George Mason University introduced Hunter to Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Learning that our ocean’s inhabitants were in such danger prompted him to become more than just an educator. He became an activist! Read More . . .

If you are among our circles of cyber activists, you have most probably seen Hunter Shaffer pop up here and there on pages, in groups and conversations --- mostly on Facebook.
Hunter did not take up his torch for saving marine life after watching Animal Planet's Whale Wars or the 2010 Academy Award winner for best documentary The Cove. He was recruited into our ranks via the Worldwide Web. He is therefore a testament to how well cyber activism can have a significant impact in spreading awareness. But that's not all!

Not only is he a strong presence in the virtual world, he is a warrior in his home town in upstate New York. He is office Manager and Wildlife Rehabilitator for the New York chapter of Global Conservation Group. (See Video below) Wow! This kid gets around and he does it all from the confines of a wheelchair.

Sea Shepherd Cove Guardian Bob Timmons rallied to raise the funds necessary to grant Hunter Shaffer his dream. If all goes as planned, he will be swimming in the ocean this coming April. In honor of these fallen heroes, thousands will be marching a similar route through a desert in New Mexico and Sea Shepherd’s Matthew Smith will be there.

The 23rd Annual Bataan Memorial Death March will be held on March 25. Registration is now closed to the public for this 26-mile marathon, but you can still show your support. As posted on the official site at bataanmarch.com:

Matt is very excited about this event. He says that he will do his best to win the race but he’s just glad he can go to represent Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

There are two routes. The Blue route (14.2 miles) is for those who don’t want to go the full stretch but still wish to show their respects. The Green route (26.2 miles) is for the warriors like Matt Smith and he doesn’t plan to walk it! There’s more! Not only is he going to run a marathon in the White Sand desert of New Mexico; he’s doing it through a missile range. This is no joke! Participants of the Death March are urged to familiarize themselves with the White Sand unexploded ordnance safety video!

I asked Matt if he wanted me to urge people to show up and lend their support. He said, “No. Not at all.” He just wants everyone to know that Sea Shepherd will be represented in this courageous memorial. My hat is off to Matthew Smith! He’s been to the Antarctica to save whales, Taiji to save dolphins and now he’s running through a frickin’ mine field to raise awareness for Sea Shepherd and what they do. Wow!

I really wish I could be there to give him a nice cold glass of water when he is done. May I suggest that if you are in the neighborhood on March 25, show up wearing your SSCS gear.

Deckhand and Crane Operator

Bob Barker

Born in Ohio, raised in Illinois, and living in Wisconsin, Matt Smith, 34, wasn’t always a conservationist. Trying to expand his horizons and leave his small town of Charleston, Illinois, Matt joined the U.S. Army right after high school. After serving multiple tours overseas, he decided to come home and start a family. Back in the US, Matt joined the International Union of Operating Engineers and traveled to Japan to try and stop the slaughter of dolphins in Taiji. While there, he was introduced to Sea Shepherd and asked by Paul Watson to join them on a campaign to the Southern Ocean. Matt is married and has a six-year-old child. He lives a green life and continues to be an activist wherever there is an animal in need of a human voice.

Life is good! I am currently residing in the beautiful mid-west, USA and I am no longer homeless. It’s wonderful that I can now cook my own meals again. After posting a photo of my vegan dumplings my good friend, Sandy, asked me for the recipe. I get many requests for recipes, so I am starting a new section whereby I may share my culinary delights.

Please keep in mind that I am vegan for the animals first, the planet second and my health last. While my primary focus is not on nutrition, I still try to get raw vegetables into my diet. I therefore suggest that you serve the following with a salad that consists of a variety of fresh organic vegetables.

I have been cooking for many years. I rarely use recipes unless I am trying something completely new. I will attempt to start measuring as I cook so that I can share my creations more easily.

Vegan Dumplings

Ingredients:

1/4 cup organic unbleached all-purpose flour

1/4 cup Earth Balance (vegan) butter

1 can peas

1 cup sliced or diced Bok Choy, celery or both (I prefer bok choy because it stays crisp.)

2 cups sliced or diced fresh carrots

1/2 cup diced red onion

1/4 cup sliced shallots (green onion)

1/2 cup bell pepper (any color)

1 cup diced mushrooms

2 cloves finely chopped fresh garlic

1-2 teaspoons salt (I prefer kosher salt or sea salt.)

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 cup tri-color rotini pasta

1 teaspoon pepper or pepper medley – white, black and red peppers along with coriander.

1 tablespoon oregano, basil or thyme (I prefer thyme but didn’t have any at the time.)

Water

Rice milk

Biscuit mix (I used Bisquick)

I did not measure anything except for the biscuit mix, but I will attempt to give you measurements.

Roux:

Combine 1/4 cup vegan butter with 1/4 cup flour in a large (4-quart) pot or dutch oven, then fire up the heat to medium-high. Stir roux once a minute for about five minutes using a flat edged wooden spatula.

Add red onion, bell pepper and mushrooms. Stir frequently until onions are translucent.

Add soy sauce and 1/2 cup water.

Move the mixture around in the bottom of the pot slowly, allowing the liquid to be saturated by the roux of its own accord. Doing this too quickly will result in lumps.

Continue to add water in 1/4 to 1/2 cup increments until the you have the desired consistency, then add one more cup of water and bring it to a slightly churning boil.

Add thyme, salt, pepper and carrots. Cook until carrots are tender.

Meanwhile, combine your biscuit mix and rice milk in a bowl according to the package recipe.

Note: Take a look at what you now have in the pot. By adding peas, diced potatoes, cornstarch and more water, you now have the filling for a pot pie. Pretty cool, huh?

By now, your mixture may have thickened. Add more water if you so desire. You may also add some rice milk if you want a creamy texture.

Add peas and bring to a boil.

Add pasta and bring to a boil. Start your timer according to how long it will take the pasta to cook.

Dumplings:

Put some extra virgin olive oil on your hands and make balls of dough. Drop them into the pot. They will float and cover the surface creating a seal, so turn the heat down to low or medium-low.

When your timer goes off, your pasta will be done and so will the dumplings. Remove the pot from the heat and cover with a lid. Let sit for about five minutes.

Sprinkle the top with garlic and shallots.

Serve

Eat

Go back for seconds!

There are many options for this recipe. If you like broccoli, you can do what I did and put diced broccoli stalks in when you add the carrots. I saved the broccoli florets for stir fry.

If you use celery, you can add bamboo shoots or water chestnuts for texture. On the other hand, if you use the bok choy and you still want the celery flavor, just add some celery seeds.

You could also have some fun with the dumplings themselves by adding the garlic and pepper to the biscuit mix. In any case, please let me know how it turned out. Enjoy!

Of course, you had some help.

As I have always said, “Controversy turns a mere subject into an issue.” The naysayers are at it again. They are spewing their pessimism, as this is what they do. They are too ignorant, of course, to realize that they are indirectly lending a hand to spreading the word of our causes.

Please visit the article and participate in the conversation.
Despite the obvious trend of #OccupyWallStreet on Twitter, the hashtag is not being listed. It is being blacked out. It only goes to prove that ‘big brother’ is watching and that he is afraid of the truth: We outnumber him 99 to 1! Regardless, everyone knows about #OccupyWallStreet because we, the people, have been spreading the word. Our source is the people on Wall Street and in every occupied city throughout the world. We share their tweets, links, photos, videos and blogs via Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Yahoo, etc. The list goes on. Just yesterday, my wife was even spreading the news on Xbox Live. I tried to spread the word at my doctor’s office, but everyone already knows. They are also very upset about how mainstream media is behaving. We are the new media and that scares the big news networks. Their days are numbered and they are starting to realize it.

One simple way to bypass the blackout on Twitter is by simply using a tag that is currently trending. At this moment #YouMightBeGhettoIf and #EvenIfYouPaidMeIWont are both at the top of the list. You could just slap them into your tweets or you could be creative and combine them like so, “#YouMightBeGhettoIf you don’t know about #OccupyWallStreet,” or “#EvenIfYouPaidMeIWont support the one percent! Get Involved! #OccupyWallStreet!” There are also other ways if you are looking to target specific audiences.

I’ve educated a lot of people on the atrocities of cetacean captivity. If you’ve seen A Fall From Freedom, you know how Seaworld used its money to influence the government into allowing them to continue with their deplorable acts. By watching the Seaworld tweets, I eventually found a weak spot. SeaWorld San Antonio started using the hashtag #SWSA. They were pushing it big-time asking everyone to use the tag, so I complied. I exposed their evils to so many of their followers that they quit using the tag.

If you are in Boston, you may want to include #Boston in your tweets. If you want to target a specific college, go to their official Twitter profile and see what tag they are using. Do a little research and you will most probably discover a unique tag that is exclusive to a unique crowd. Most importantly, always include a link with your posts. Give them more info than what can be included in 140 characters.

Including a link has another nice little side effect. There are online newspapers that are based on hashtags and they display the link that corresponds with that tag. Here are just a few examples . . .

The #atlanta Daily

The #indiana Daily

The #miami Daily

The #vegan Daily

Many of these papers also have a sub-category where articles with other tags are displayed: #jobs, #finance, etc. The point is that you should use tags to target your audience or use them just for the heck of it. Who knows? There may be people out there who follow the tags for #food, #weather, etc. So when you combine tags, you will reach a whole different audience: “The #Weather is nice 2day for our #Orlando rally! #OccupyOrlando #OccupyWallStreet” This one would obviously show up in “Orlando Weather.” Pretty cool! Huh?

There is even more you can do. If you have a blog, start blogging about the cause. If you don’t have a blog, start one. You don’t have to be a good writer. In fact, you can simply copy another post with a link to your source, like the one I did here: #OccupyWallStreet: for People, #AnimalRights and the #Environment There is a very good reason why we should all be doing this. We are the media and you may have noticed that when a story breaks, it is everywhere. We, as the people, now have the responsibility to make this revolution breaking news every day. The world wide web is exactly that; it’s a web. It’s a network of links. The more links that go back to a particular article, blog post, photo, video or story, the better. The search engines don’t find things with magic. They find them via links and every time they find a link to a particular article, the engines re-index that page. So get those links out there in every way you can. Make is so that no one can surf in peace without stumbling upon news that we deem newsworthy. Make it so that this impending #revolution constantly #occupies their browsers, smart phones and their thoughts!

My wife brought our daughter, Kyra, to the pediatrician a few days ago. While in the waiting room, she snapped a few photos from a book lying there. It promoted a vegan diet. In fact, it stated that, “Meat is not essential in the human diet. By understanding the nutritional value of the available alternatives, eliminating it can be easy and healthful.” The book went on to disclose the health hazards associated with meat and dairy products. It even revealed how meat is addictive. (Click photos to enlarge)

It’s no wonder that such reading material would be in a physician’s office. Any doctor who keeps up on newly released medical journals and research findings knows that humans should not eat meat. Since I became vegan, I have had two doctors praise me for my diet. Dr. Campbell, in Massachusetts, even told me that being vegan was the most healthy thing that I could do. The recent movie Forks Over Knives explores the issue in depth. It reveals research conclusions spanning over decades that has been conducted on literally billions of people. The film also explains how and why the government perpetuates the myth that we must have meat in our diet.

The movie Earthlings approaches the need for a vegan diet from a completely different angle – compassion. As Woody Harrelson says, it is “A must see for anyone who cares enough to know.” I also agree with Professor Peter Singer that “If I could make everyone in the world see one film, I’d make them see Earthlings” Nevertheless, there are those who refuse to watch it and those who refuse to finish watching it.

What the United Nations has said here is nothing new. In September of 2008 we read that the “UN says eat less meat to curb global warming”. In June of 2010, it was released that the “UN urges global move to meat and dairy-free diet”. Of course, if you have seen The End of the Line, you already know that our oceans are headed for disaster by the year 2048 and the only thing that can be done to save the planet is for everyone to go vegan.

So pick your flavor. You can alter your diet for yourself and for your loved ones so that you can live longer, you can change your eating habits because you have compassion for the animals of this planet or you can become vegan so that you can do your part in saving the world and all of its inhabitants. “Compassion and love are not a luxury. As the source both of inner and external peace, they are fundamental to the survival of our species.” – Dalai Lama

If you choose, however, to remain an omnivore despite the vast media that would encourage you otherwise, you should announce your decision. I do not condemn nor do I hold accountable those who have not been urged to watch these films or read these articles. I cannot cast blame on anyone that simply has no clue as to the inevitable demise of Mother Earth’s children; but the time shall come when the world finally “gets it.” The time will come when everyone will understand that the diet of each and every one of us has a part in the salvation of destruction of life on Earth. When this global awareness is finally reached, people will be enraged with their governments for not issuing an emergency alert much sooner. Even more, they will be livid with those who were privy to this information and yet chose to have an active hand in killing their offspring. So be open in your decision if you refuse to become a vegan. Let the world know that you are its true enemy and that, despite all your actions, you are the “inactivist” that did not change one bit where it matters most.

This is the part that really counts. This is where you show your true colors, not just to the world but to yourself as well. Are you really so self-centered that pleasure from your taste buds is prerequisite over all else? How can you rally to save dolphins, whales, turtles, dogs, cats, etc. when you are sentencing their descendants to extinction? What is your real agenda? Do you go to a protest or sign a petition because it gives you a warm feeling inside? Is your activism actually penance for the animals that suffer and die to be your tasty morsels? Or is it because you like being a part of a group and you just love the attention? In any case, it all goes back to whether or not you are selfish or selfless. We need to know. We need to know now who you really are. “We judge ourselves by what we feel capable of doing, while others judge us by what we have already done.” – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I’m tired of hearing the petty excuses! Go ahead and campaign to save sharks or seals, but don’t try to convince me that it is nothing more than a hobby! Just be honest and admit why you do what you do, because it most certainly isn’t because you are altruistic. “You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him.” ~ James D. Miles

When I first heard that Sea Shepherd’s Captain Paul Watson was going to be in live chat on Animal Rights Zone, I rushed on over. This was in October of 2010. Since then, I have taken advantage of my free membership to post a blog and spend time chatting with other animal welfare advocates. There have also been many interesting guests in the chat room. This past Saturday evening, my smart phone informed me of an event with only fifteen minutes to spare.

I was fortunate enough to be a part of Nick Cooney’s live chat. To be honest, I had never heard of him but was quite impressed only minutes into the interview. Nick is a rather brilliant fellow. He uses science and statistics to gauge the effectiveness of his activism. He also has a very simple concept. In order to save the animals of this planet, people have to change. People will only change if they have a desire to do so. We must therefore approach them in way that appeals to them.

The best way for us to directly have a hand in sparing animals from torture and certain death is to lead a vegan lifestyle. It’s only common sense. The best way to indirectly have an impact is to spread the word of animal cruelty so that others will join the cause.

A priest would not stand on a street corner trying to convince pedestrians to become priests. If anything, he would just try to get them to attend a church service, after which, he would encourage them to come back. Urging the people on the street to become priests would probably be a wasted effort and would scare away the ones who may have been inclined to simply attend mass.

Veganism is a way of life and, by definition, it is a religion. For an individual to go from a rodeo-attending, fur-wearing, leather-loving omnivore to a vegan is a mighty big step. I’ve actually seen people leave the animal rights movement because a Mr. Vegan-or-else was harassing them. It makes me wonder just how many animals were saved by doing that! I would have to say, “None!” It is only common sense that it is counter productive.

Animal Rights Zone is a place where activists can go to share ideas and have discussions on how to save the sentient beings of this planet. I am always ready listen to new concepts and strategies because I know that I am not perfect. I don’t know it all and I never will. I will always have room to grow. Please however, take just a bit of my advice. Don’t spend time arguing with other activists. Utilize that energy attempting to enlighten others who can contribute to the cause.

I encourage you to check out the entire transcript of Nick Conney’s chat on Animal Rights Zone. Please join the Zone and be sure to send me a friend request while you are in there.

“. . . sometimes we need to put emphasis on the reasons that will actually motivate other people, not just the reasons that we ourselves find most compelling. It’s such a paradigm shift in terms of our activism, focusing on ‘What will motivate this other person to do what I want them to do and believe what I want them to believe?’ as opposed to ‘What do I believe?’” ~ Nick Cooney

I asked him if he had seen The Cove movie and his reply was, “Yes and it was stupid.” He hated those of us who love animals and said that our focus should be on helping humans instead. He even went so far as to say that he enjoys a movie with lots of animal slaughter. He was more than a mere buffoon; he was downright evil and his mindset would not be swayed. What he could not understand is that we are helping humankind by helping the animals.

There was a time when most of the world believed that our planet was flat, but there were some who knew different as early as 6 B.C. Even the Holy Bible has inscriptions to the contrary. The reason why it took so long for the rest of the world to accept the planetary sphere concept is because people like to believe what they are told. Religious leaders and governments said that the Earth was flat and that is all they needed to hear. It wasn’t until a government decided to accept the truth and proclaim it, that the ball of truth got rolling. Even in our modern day and age, people would prefer to listen to what someone else has to say than to do the research for themselves. There are also those out there who will never accept the truth even if it comes up and bites them on the back pocket. In fact, there are some who still believe the Earth is flat! Just like the buffoon in Cartersville, some people are far too stupid to know just how ignorant they really are.

According to scientists, our oceans will be depleted of marine life by the year 2048. (Don’t take my word for it. Do the research for yourself. You have the world wide web at your fingertips.) The oceans give us eighty percent of our oxygen. If the seas die, we die. So why haven’t our governments told us about this yet? It’s not like they don’t know. They read the newspapers and science journals. They employ some of the best scientists on this round Earth. They know how people like to believe what their governments tell them, so why are they so hush-hush?

There are two ways to remedy the situation. Either the human population would have to be significantly decreased in numbers or everyone in the world would have to become vegans. First of all, if any government disclosed the impending cataclysm, it could create mass hysteria on a global level. There could be a world-wide riot against governments for not revealing the truth sooner. Second, there are just too many hard-headed buffoons in this world who will not make an effort to change. Asking the world to go vegan would create a civil war within every community because those who would want to save their children and grandchildren, would have to defend their families by killing off the omnivores who are destroying the planet. So, you see, the only logical solution is for our governments to allow the status quo. They will continue to allow chemicals to be added to our vegetables and antibiotics to be injected into our meats. They will allow the pollution of our air and waters. They will allow us to kill ourselves.

Why? Because they have a plan. Whether it is surviving underground or relocating to another planet, they are set to go. Why else do you think that every United States president in the last half century has gone back on his word? They make all of these wonderful promises to make our country a better place only to forget them once they are in office. It is undoubtedly because they have been recruited into the elite club of people who know the truth and have an escape. The important promises they made to the public are no longer of concern to them. They must now be concerned with the welfare of their own families. They must now be a team player and go by the club rules.

So, what can we do? It’s up to us and we are the media!

Get people involved in the manner I describe in Share The Cove DVD. The Cove documentary changes people. It makes them want to get involved in a worthy cause. In the process, they encounter other travesties against nature and they usually want to learn more.

Share Sharkwater with them. This movie further reveals the plight of our oceans and exposes how our media has created a monster from an affectionate and gravely misunderstood creature.

Introduce them to Mother Earth’s Navy. There is no better way to have a hand in saving our oceans than to support Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

Share The End of the Line. This film is a culmination of scientific data explaining the cause and effects of the downfall of our oceans in the year 2048.

Finally, share Earthlings with them. This is the one movie that everyone must see! It speaks for itself.

It has launched me on a mission wherein I shall not back down or relent. I don’t get paid a single cent to do what I do. I do it simply because it is the right thing to do. I do it because I want my children to forever know that I did all that I could. The atrocities in Taiji, however, are only the tip or the iceberg. According to scientists, all sea life will be depleted by the year 2048. Such a catastrophe will also be the demise of the human race. If we save the oceans, we save ourselves . . . we save our children and their children.

What I do is also what I simply must do. I have a voice while many do not. The animals of this world do not have a voice. I do not necessarily mean that they cannot speak. Even if they could utter our words, they would not be heard by our governments, speciesists and mammoth corporations. Human infants and many children do not have a voice. While I would love to campaign for all of the voiceless, I am only one man. I can only do so much. I am torn every time I hear of a child who has been abused. I am stricken every time I hear of a defenseless animal that was skinned alive for his or her fur. I would love to save the world by attacking each and every issue, but my concentration is on ocean preservation because it is vital to all other issues. What good would it be if we put an end to factory farming, only to have all animals of the planet die a slow death in a few decades from now?

Nevertheless, I am incredibly grateful to those who are on the front lines to help the voiceless. I am comforted in knowing that many are fighting to end vivisection, factory farming and other horrendous acts of cruelty against the voiceless. I am proud of the many warriors out there who fight for what is right. I love my Peta friends and I honor the heroes of the Animal Liberation Front. I am in awe of those who work to save the children of this world from abuse and hunger. I commend you all! Thank you for being you!

The world is changing. Scientists are learning the complex language of the dolphin. It’s only a matter of time before the dolphins shall be given their voice. Time, however, may not be a luxury they can afford. Meanwhile, we must be their voice! We must do the right thing! Many of our young people understand what “the right thing” is. They are rising up and taking on a voice for what they believe in.

Dominic Geragi attends protests and is on fire for marine conservation. This fine young man is one of my favorite Twitter friends. (I suggest you follow him: http://twitter.com/Domsters101) He tirelessly displays his heroism in the cyber world and in his home town.
Sapna Meena, (age 15), is yet another fine example of our next generation. In a country where forty percent of the populace still holds onto outdated traditions, she has taken on a voice for herself to not be married at such a young age.
I would like to ask something of my thousands of readers, Facebook friends and Twitter friends. My birthday is coming up on the 29th of August. I would like for just one of you to send Sapna Meena a DVD of The Cove movie. This is a girl that gets things done. Not only would she be an asset to the cause, I think that she deserves to know what is going on in Taiji, Japan. Okay, so now you have a little research to conduct to obtain her address. That’s okay. You can handle it. You have the World Wide Web at your fingertips! So what are you waiting for? Who will be the first to get a copy of The Cove to her? It’s alright if she gets multiple copies. She can always give them away, but who will be first?

And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. Genesis 1:29

There are carnivorous animals in this world who do not kill their own prey. They are scavengers. We use this term in a derogatory sense, because vultures and other scavengers don’t have what it takes to be anything more than what they are. Someone or something else has to do their dirty work for them.

Maybe we use this word so distastefully because it reminds us of ourselves. How many of us actually kill our own prey? Instead we have someone do the dirty work for us and we are presented with a nice, clean package at our local grocery. Many times, the meat department even depicts the slaughtered souls as happy cartoon characters. How cute!

If we want to remove ourselves even further from guilt, we can dine out. Nothing could be more convenient than the finished product being placed before us. In fact, we can bask in our pride of human superiority and accomplishment by having a portion of the carcass served to us. Besides, we’ve earned it. Right? We can even partake of our animal friends in the name of God, especially on Sunday after paying our dues at church. We can discuss God’s love while feasting on those who once loved. We can speak of compassion while ignoring the compassion that may have existed in the being at the end of our forks. We can spend quality time with our families and never give a thought to the families who lost one of its members to our plate. Isn’t life grand?

We spend our hard earned money on meat and we don’t have to acknowledge what these sentient beings had to endure to become our meal. The world was made for mankind and our human brothers and sisters have done a wonderful job of making things easier for us. Instead of flesh, we eat meat. Instead of having to order a little blood in our steaks, we can order them medium rare. Instead of murder, we can conveniently use the term, “slaughter.” The list of terminologies goes on and on. We have been sheltered like toddlers so that we can eat our meat with a smile on our precious little faces. We have been treated like sissies and we are content to play the part.

I say that it’s time that we stopped being pansies! If we are going to partake of the flesh and blood of a being that once walked, breathed and cried, then we at least owe it to them to know of their demise. They at least deserve that much.

We should all watch Earthlings! It’s free at Earthlings.com. Only then can we say that we truly paid our dues and deserve to enjoy our Sunday buffets. Only then can we hold a mirror before ourselves to discover just how cold we truly are. On the other hand, you may find just how compassionate you are and do as I have done: go vegan.

I had a feeling that I should bring a copy of The Cove with me, but I left empty handed. While in town, I visited an herbal shop and purchased some sleeping pills. Contrary to popular belief, I do sleep but not as much as I would like. Upon leaving the shop, the thought had occurred to me to call a cab, but I felt compelled to start the 2.7 mile journey on foot.

The clouds loomed and threatened to drench me, but fate gave me a calm sense of resolution. The very pace in which I strode seemed to be predestined. I was on a mission and knew not what it was.

Halfway through my trek, I spied a pawn shop. I do so love pawn shops. There is always something interesting at a pawn shop and the prices can be very reasonable. The gentlemen inside were courteous and helpful, but I was there to just look around. There was an assortment of jewelry, electronics, big manly power tools, DVDs, video games . . . DVDs!

I perused the movies which were priced at a mere $2.50 each or five for ten bucks, but I only needed one; something to entertain me for the evening. As I was scanning the titles, it crossed my mind to look for The Cove film. No way! What would be the chances? Three quarters of the way down the large wall of plastic cases, there it was in all its splendor. The Cove! I snatched it up and set off to purchase it, but not before making certain there was another copy.

Once again on my stroll home, I must have been a curious sight with my Save Japan Dolphins polo shirt, “End It” cap and The Cove DVD in hand. Had someone asked me if I were a religious fanatic, my reply would have been, “Yes. I am a Utopian!”

At one point, I had to cross the street. Apparently, Cartersville had run out of funding to have a sidewalk on both sides of North Tennessee Street. Traffic had suddenly become very heavy. If felt a lot like Bugs Bunny when he was trying to cross the road and the cars started zooming by whenever he took a step in that direction. Finally, I was able to cross.

With less than a mile to my home, I approached a young man walking in my direction. I nodded and said, “Hi,” which is customary in these parts. This was definitely not New York City. Making eye contact and greeting people on the street is quite normal here and is very rude to do otherwise.

The funniest thing happened! As I should have passed him, he stopped and made an about face all in one fluid motion and was now walking beside me. “Could I ask you a question, if you don’t mind?” he broke right into conversation.

“Sure!” My curiosity had the best of me.

“Don’t you find that women are slippery, like fish?”

Wow! He was asking my opinion on relationships and he somehow managed to interject a reference to marine life! Far be it from me to not indulge him.

His girlfriend had taken off to be with another guy and he was kicking himself for not telling her, “Goodbye.” He was still

more concerned for her feelings than he was his own. We talked about relationships, integrity and perspectives on life. I told him about the movie that had changed my life and handed over the DVD. He was rather eager to watch the Oscar winning film especially since my tattoo had given us cause to discuss Whale Wars, a show that he was well familiar with. Kirk is concerned about our planet and interested in marine life, especially sharks. He gave me his number, which I promised to call. I will be sharing much more with him in the not too distant future.

I purchased five new copies of The Cove from Amazon.com for $6.33 each and I did so on my meager Social Security income. If I can do it, so can you. The Cove changes people! It makes them want to do something about the atrocities perpetrated by the evil of Taiji, Japan. In the process, they become aware of other issues that need attention. They become activists!

Buy your copies of The Cove today. For each copy that you hand out, you are starting a ripple that becomes a wave. Every person who watches The Cove tells others to do the same and they are contributing to the worldwide army of environmentally conscious soldiers that we so desperately need.

When you pass out the DVDs, don’t just hand them over to anyone. Feel them out. Make sure that they at least love animals. There’s no point in giving such a valuable item to a trapper, whaler or a serial killer.

Our youth is the future of this planet. Isn’t it convenient that Save Japan Dolphins sells shirts? They also have hats, hoodies, bracelets, etc. You can donate to the cause and be a walking billboard at the same time. Who could ask for anything more? And let’s not forget the Cove Guardians who have spent every day in Taiji this past hunting season. Everybody looks cool in a Sea Shepherd shirt!

: a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith

Examples of RELIGION

Many people turn to religion for comfort in a time of crisis.

There are many religions, such as Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism.

Shinto is a religion that is unique to Japan.

Hockey is a religion in Canada.

Politics are a religion to him.

Where I live, high school football is religion.

Food is religion in this house.

I’m seeing many divorces occur and many in the making, within our activist communities. Normally, I would consider break-ups a bad thing. In these cases, I have to wonder.

A while back, I had a couple of friends on facebook who were in some of the same groups. (I will refer to them as Jane and John.) Jane was very devoted to seeing the killings in The Cove come to an end. Her husband was always telling her that she spent too much time for the cause and that she was only one person; therefore, she could not make a difference. John was in the same boat. His wife ridiculed him for wanting to change the world and she wouldn’t even take the time to watch ‘The Cove.’

Jane and John chatted often on facebook. They had much in common. It wasn’t too long before Jane drove from here home in the deep south of the USA to meet John just south of Canada. The rest was history. They both filed for a divorce and became a couple.

Many of us have become activists in a short period of time. A good example of this is the viewing of the Acadamy award winning documentary, ‘The Cove.’ At some point in the movie, we find ourselves saying, “Something must be done. This has to stop!” That is when we become activists. Whether our passion is to save the whales or see an end to factory farming, we want to see this world become a better place. We want to change the world and save the planet from pain, suffering and inevitable demise.

There was a time when people simply did not marry someone of another religion. Religions were a way of life and they were the foundations of our belief systems and therefore dictated our very way of thinking. Our belief, as activists, that there should be an end to pain and suffering in this world, determines how we live our lives from day to day. It also gives us some insight on what our other half is truly like. Wanting to make the world a better place and acting on that desire is very selfless and altruistic. If our “life partner” is not concerned with such ideals or even derogatory toward our cause, then we realize just how self-centered our mate is. We realize that they are complete opposites of us. We realize that they are of a different religion!

If you have a belief that something must be done to make this world a better place, if you have a commitment or devotion to a cause or set of principles (whether they be your own or of an organization), if you are living a conscientious life of scrupulous conformity, then you are by definition religious. Like it or not! Whether you are an atheist or a clergyman, you are seeking a place of ideal perfection especially in laws, government, and social conditions. You are working toward an impractical scheme for social improvement. You have hope. You see in your mind’s eye the reality of an imaginary and indefinitely remote place and your faith is what keeps you going.

You, my friend, by definition are a Utopian!

Well what do you expect from a totalitarian state? It is totalitarian; isn’t it? No, wait. I thought it was a democracy! Oh well. It’s hard to tell anymore.

Anyway, Canada had a little problem trying to sell the products of their little holocaust hobby. It seems that most of the world wants nothing to do with their seal cull. What a shame! Members of the Canadian government would have no real excuse for letting the brutality go on. They would no longer be able to be able to send their evenings with their families, going over fresh new photos of blood-soaked snow. Damn! They would have to settle for old pictures of seals killed too long ago.

Canada’s Prime Ministers were not about to give up so easily. They kept on looking for someone to buy their dirty laundry. Lo and behold! They found a customer. Who could possibly make a better business partner in blood than cannibals? That’s right! China’s government says that it is okay to eat humans. Wow! Canada must have been feeling rather aroused when they heard this! Certainly China would accept their bloody trade. China has.

Logical Progress

While every year tons and tons of nutritious baby-meat is just thrown out in Europe and America, Chinese gourmands make good use of their baby-cull. A little non-human stewed for 8 hours with Chinese herbs is thought to boost one’s “yang”. Naturally, a mother has the right to choose.

A restaurant in Foshan, Guangdong Province, calls the dish, “spare ribs”. The chef collects girl babies from the surrounding poor villagers; sometimes an aborted baby, sometimes a still-born, sometimes an infanticided second child. The restaurant guarantees that its babies are fresh, not frozen.

often capitalized : a place of ideal perfection especially in laws, government, and social conditions

: an impractical scheme for social improvement

I remember when I was young, my grandmother gave me a little wooden box. She told me how precious it was. It had a small cream-colored knob atop the lid and matching legs to stand on. These were pure ivory, she told me. Ivory is what made this box so very special.

I had seen a movie where men on safari came across an elephant graveyard. It was a stretch of barren land where hundreds of elephants’ skeletons stood high. It was a sacred place, for this is where the magnificent beasts went to die. Naturally, I assumed that this is where ivory was obtained and should therefore be regarded as precious. This must be why my grandmother had so much respect for the little wooden box.

Raised in a world of plastics and polyesters, everything around me was made. From furniture and jewelry to meatloaf and pasta, everything comes from somewhere else. In time, I discovered how ivory was made. These glorious creatures were savagely brought down for their tusks. These great sentient beings were murdered for Ivory. To say, “What a waste!” is an understatement. So much was lost to make these cream-colored trinkets. This was far from sacred.

In my twenties, I learned how veal was made. A calf is imprisoned in a box so that it cannot move, sometimes in total darkness. It remains in this makeshift coffin for the duration of its short life. Then it is killed. How could anyone conceive such a thing? Where did this all start? Who even came up with this? Nazis? As a native of Louisiana, I see even a baby alligator as cute and adorable. It’s helpless and harmless. It’s just a baby! How could anyone be okay with the torture that is imposed on a baby cow?

Needless to say, I quit eating veal.

I saw a piece on my local news station about how birds were slowly being strangled to death. It showed ducks, seagulls and other winged souls with plastic rings around their necks. As the bird grew, the plastic would become tighter and eat into their flesh. Soon, they would not be able to swallow and they would perish. These rings of death are what man made to keep a six-pack of drinks together. Armed with a pair of scissors, I immediately went to my trash bin to see if I had any so that I could cut each ring open. When on the job, I would tell my coworkers to give me their plastic so that I could discard of it properly.

With each bit of knowledge that I have attained throughout my life, I have altered my daily routines. In effect, I have change my way of living. Had I known then what I know now, I would have been what I am today. Vegan.

Every time we do something good for the animals, we are doing something good for ourselves. Every time we do something to make this planet a better place, we become better people. We are striving toward the same goal.

Whether you are a fanatic for recycling or a crusader for the Animal Liberation Front, on some level you are just like me. You also seek a better place to call home. You also wish to save this place we call Earth. You want, as I do, to reach out an touch the intangible dream of a New World. Do not despair. It is not impossible. It is slightly within our grasp. See it with your mind’s eye and feel it with your heart of hearts. We will persevere. We will save this planet one way or another. For as long as we work together to make it happen, we are becoming better people. And as long as I have you on my side, I believe. I have faith that a brighter future is eventually in store. Whatever obstacles may come, no matter how bad things may get, we will emerge victorious!

Whether we rally against fur or campaign to save the whales, we are all working together to make that imaginary and remote place very real and very tangible. In the process, we have begun a social order that is very practical. We have appointed ourselves, as a whole, to undertake this revolution: thus, we have defined ourselves as Utopians.

Dolphins have been declared the world’s second most intelligent creatures after humans, with scientists suggesting they are so bright that they should be treated as “non-human persons”.

Studies into dolphin behaviour have highlighted how similar their communications are to those of humans and that they are brighter than chimpanzees. These have been backed up by anatomical research showing that dolphin brains have many key features associated with high intelligence. Read More…

WASHINGTON — A group of dolphins living off the coast of Australia apparently teach their offspring to protect their snouts with sponges while foraging for food in the sea floor.

Researchers say it appears to be a cultural behavior passed on from mother to daughter, a first for animals of this type, although such learning has been seen in other species.

The dolphins, living in Shark Bay, Western Australia, use conically shaped whole sponges that they tear off the bottom, said Michael Kruetzen, lead author of a report on the dolphins in Tuesday’s issue of Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. Read More…

by Mike Celizic

Surfer Todd Endris needed a miracle. The shark — a monster great white that came out of nowhere — had hit him three times, peeling the skin off his back and mauling his right leg to the bone.

That’s when a pod of bottlenose dolphins intervened, forming a protective ring around Endris, allowing him to get to shore, where quick first aid provided by a friend saved his life.

“Truly a miracle,” Endris told TODAY’s Natalie Morales on Thursday.

The attack occurred on Tuesday, Aug. 28, just before 11 a.m. at Marina State Park off Monterey, Calif., where the 24-year-old owner of Monterey Aquarium Services had gone with friends for a day of the sport they love. Nearly four months later, Endris, who is still undergoing physical therapy to repair muscle damage suffered during the attack, is back in the water and on his board in the same spot where he almost lost his life. Read More…

A dolphin has come to the rescue of two whales which had become stranded on a beach in New Zealand.

Conservation officer Malcolm Smith told the BBC that he and a group of other people had tried in vain for an hour and a half to get the whales to sea.

The pygmy sperm whales had repeatedly beached, and both they and the humans were tired and set to give up, he said.

But then the dolphin appeared, communicated with the whales, and led them to safety. Read More… | Watch Video

The picturesque Japanese fishing village of Taiji (in southwestern Honshu) has become notorious in recent years for its annual dolphin hunt, in which some 2,500 dolphins and other small cetaceans are killed in coastal waters between September and April. Using a technique called drive fishing, hunters in a line of motorized boats create a “wall of sound” between the dolphins and the open ocean by banging on metal poles lowered into the water; the poles have bell-shaped devices at one end to amplify the sound. The dolphins, who rely on sonar to navigate, are immediately disoriented and terrified and swim frantically to shore to escape the noise. There they are corralled into a small cove and trapped overnight by nets; at sunrise the next morning they are herded into an adjacent “killing cove,” where they are stabbed to death by hunters using harpoons, fish hooks, and knives. The emerald waters of the cove literally turn red with the animals’ blood. Some injured or exhausted dolphins simply drown. Fishermen drag still-living animals onto boats with hooks and harpoons or tie them to boats by the tail, forcing their airholes under water. Read More…

A big name movie star, sports star or music star would bring the much needed publicity to the Dolphin Holocaust that exists today in Taiji, Japan. The barbaric hunters would be foolish to conduct their hunts amidst the media presence that would be attracted by a well known celebrity.

The horrific slaughters depicted in the Acadamy Award winning film ‘The Cove‘ are still happening. More than 800 sentient beings have had their lives snuffed out since early September of 2010; some of them have even been held underwater and drowned. After witnessing their families murdered, others have been hauled off to a life of slavery in Marine Theme Parks to do tricks for food.

The Cove Guardians have been at The Cove since the season started. They have filmed, photographed and documented the atrocities on a daily basis. The dolphins need a Star to be a Cove Guardian! They need one yesterday. They need one last week. They need one Three Months Ago! But I am sure that the dolphins will settle for RIGHT NOW!

There are many stars that are aware of the mass murders, but they have not been in Taiji for even one day since September 2010.

Many of you are die-hard vegans. You saw ‘Meet Your Meat,’ ‘Earthlings‘ or you were fortunate enough to have animal-loving parents.
Many of you are die-hard vegans. You saw ‘Meet Your Meat,’ ‘Earthlings‘ or you were fortunate enough to have animal-loving parents. My journey to veganism was more of an indirect route. It was something that Captain Paul Watson said during an episode of Whale Wars that prompted me to give up seafood. I became a big fan of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and even got a cool tattoo to prove it. I knew that they served only vegan cuisine on board the SSCS vessels, but I assumed that this was so they could be blameless in the eyes of their opposition.

I started reading everything from the Sea Shepherd website. Whale Wars just wasn’t enough for me; I wanted more. I read about the atrocities in Taiji, Japan and was motivated to watch ‘The Cove.’ It was this movie that truly made me an activist. Before, I had merely been a Sea Shepherd fan with a desire to save the whales. Now I was more than eager to carry a sign whenever there was a demonstration. I started seeking others like myself and found most of them on Facebook.’The Cove’ makes people want to do something. It gets people involved. Those who would have never considered signing petitions and attending demonstrations, suddenly find themselves to be activists.

It was ‘The End of the Line’ that inspired me to become a vegetarian. I didn’t give my new meatless lifestyle a second thought. I was excited that I was doing something to help the planet. I was glad I could participate, on a daily basis, in helping Mother Earth. Less than two weeks later, I saw ‘Earthlings.’ That’s all it took! I was now a life long, full time participant in making this world a better place, in the most dedicated and profound way possible.

I search the internet daily to find people who have just seen ‘The Cove.’ They are almost always saying something like, “Something must be done!” or “I wish I could do more!’ I send them information on how they can be a part of our active circles and they are always very grateful. Many of my online friends have eventually become vegetarian of vegan, but they have done so out of choice and they did it when they were ready.

I have seen some of the die-hard vegans be very aggressive and imposing and I have even seen a couple of people just vanish from our cause. Veganism is very much like a religion. You wouldn’t grab someone on the streets and say, “Come with me. You’re going to be a priest!” Some people need more time than others and everyone should do something because they want to do it; not because they were pressured into it. What we have to understand is that there are literally two types of people on this Earth. As Louis Psihoyos once said, “To me, you’re either an activist or an inactivist.” You may think that the inactivists just need to be educated, but I beg to differ. What they need is a purpose! ‘The Cove’ gives them that purpose. ‘The Cove’ turns people into activists in less than two hours. It makes people want to actually do something. It makes them want to get involved in making this world a better place. In the process, they are becoming better people which ignites a burning desire to become even better people. They are better people because they are not doing something for themselves, but for the dolphins and the planet and for the generations to come.

Some people can’t handle seeing ‘Earthlings’ until they have come to a point in their lives where they feel they need to or want to. Many will just turn it off after the first few minutes and turn away from the whole issue. I watched it because I wanted to. I wanted to know. I needed to know. Whether we realize it or not, we activists are on a never-ending path to become more human. When the day comes that we are not trying to make this world a better place, then that is the day we are no longer becoming more than what we are. We are growing and some take a little longer to grow than others. So don’t be pushy. A pat on the back is encouraging, while scorn is demoralizing.

I encourage you to share ‘The Cove’ with everyone. If you’ve not seen it, you should. It speaks for itself. People need to know what is happening in Taiji. Everyone needs to know. What they do with that knowledge is up to them, but I can guarantee you that they will never be the same and most of them will be on our side after viewing it. There’s nothing we need more than a boom in the activist population. We need an army and a much larger navy than what we have now.

“The most compassionate form of giving is done with no thought or expectation of reward, and grounded in genuine concern for others.” – Dalai Lama

A few days ago, a friend sent me an image that he created. I posted it and thanked him publicly. He asked me to remove the public address to his selfless act. I completely understand him. I do not particularly want credit for anything that I do for a noble cause. I nevertheless accept it because my Italian side of the family has always taught me that it is an insult to turn down a gift. Their thanks is a way for them to give back. Still, it makes me a bit uncomfortable.

There has been a lot of talk in the activist circles about credit being due. It has been said that an article or blog post is considered intellectual property. A video or a photograph can be copyrighted. I can understand if you are a big organization or a professional writer, but people on facebook are getting upset about people stealing ideas and photos. Most of my facebook friends are dedicated to stopping the atrocities that occur in Taji, Japan. If you are not familiar with this, please watch The Cove. Dolphins are being abused and inhumanely slaughtered. We are on a mission to see this holocaust end.

This is not about “what is mine.” This is about spreading awareness and doing something to save lives. Giving me credit for doing a selfless act, in my opinion, almost negates it. Nothing is more personally gratifying than a completely selfless act, but if even one person knows about that act it is just not as precious. It is not as fulfilling. I have done some things in my life that I will never share with another. It is what helps me remain pure of heart. If I were to post a photograph for the sake of furthering our cause to save the lives of intelligent sentient beings; if I were to stamp a copyright on this picture and say that it is mine, I would wash away all selflessness that remains in me with an act that is quite the contrary.

I would like to ask everyone reading this to take my photos, my videos, my words and my blog and share them. Download them and upload them to your own pages. Copy my blog posts and put them on yours. Whatever you do, please do not mention my name anywhere. I am asking you to do this because it will make me feel better and maybe these acts will help balance the energy and karma in respect to those that need the praise, attention, recognition and copyrights for deeds that should be for the dolphins alone.

The horrible things that are happening in Taiji are only the tip of the iceberg. I want to see all suffering end. I want all pain and death to be wiped away, but I can only do so much. I campaign against the killers of The Cove, but it is a small portion of the big picture. According to scientists, there will be no sea life left in the oceans by the year 2048. You can watch The End of The Line or research the subject for yourself.

If the seas die, we die. This planet will rid itself of the human race. What good will your copyrights be then? How will it matter if you got credit for an idea that someone used in a video they created to raise awareness for a worthy cause? What’s important is that the word gets out before it’s too late. It doesn’t matter whose freakin’ idea a video was if that video raises awareness to bring us one step closer to saving our grandchildren. This is about the dolphins and the animals of our planet. This is about the generations of humans to come and whether they come at all. This is not about YOU!

If you disagree, then you need to find another hobby, because that is what this is to you.

She told me how he could see me when I was asleep and he knew when I was awake. We had no chimney, so he could pass through walls. He knew every child in the world by name. He knew my name. No matter what time of year it was, he knew when I was bad. He also knew when I was good. In fact, he rewarded me. Once a year he would come to our house and put presents under the tree for me. With all of his mystical powers, he found it in his heart to make the effort to come all the way from the North Pole to deliver presents. I was one of those children whose home he visited!

My grandmother was a devout Catholic. She taught me about God and the teachings of the church. She showed me how to pray and be a good boy in the eyes of God, who always watched over me. Naturally, I assumed that Santa Claus was a part of the Holy Trinity. Besides, Santa physically came to my home and bestowed tangible gifts unto me. He blessed me with rewards that I cherished: rewards I could touch and feel. I believed in and respected God, but Santa was of this Earth. He was my connection to the other realm. He was my real-life hero.

When I was ten years old, I found myself at school defending my hero to the other children. After all, my grandmother would never lie to me and I saw the presents. I touched them. I still had them at home as proof! My argument did not sway the opinions of these unbelievers and there were so many of them. They succeeded in planting a seed of doubt in me and I finally had no choice but to confront my grandmother on this issue.

She came clean. I had been lied to all this time. He never visited. The gifts were not from him. He did not even know my name . . . because he was not real. I had but one more question to ask her. “What about God?”

Most religions teach us that we should have compassion. They tell us that we should do right by others and in the process, we will save our very souls. Many are evangelical, meaning that we must enlighten others to save their souls as well. So what happened? Why do we see so much selfishness in religion? We are to save our own souls while we leave a dying planet in our wake. We are to insure our place in the far-beyond while future generations will have to suffer from our selfishness.

According to scientists, there will be little or no life left in the oceans as of the year 2048. You don’t believe me? Look it up! Research it for yourself. While you are doing that, you may as well research the repercussions of such an environmental catastrophe. If the seas die, we die . . . or should I say, the ones we leave behind will die.

But that’s okay because we can just save our souls and that is all that matters.

Forty percent of fish caught in the oceans are fed to livestock and farm raised fish. Most of the land used to grow vegetables is used for producing feed for livestock. Our meat habits are destroying the Earth. But that’s okay too. We can leave compassion in the wind and enjoy another meal from a dead animal. If the entire world were vegan, there would be no hunger and we would not be animal rights activists. Talk about a utopia!

You may say, “Well why should I be vegan when the rest of the world isn’t? It’s not gonna matter anyway if just little old me becomes a veggie freak!”

Hmm! Do I detect a note of selfishness in your tone?

Maybe I do follow a religion. Maybe I follow them all. Does it matter? How can we even have the slightest bit of comfort in our own souls if we don’t do everything in our power to fix this mess we have created? I have many years to make up for. I may never make up for all the animals who suffered so I could have a comfortable life, but that is not going to stop me from trying.

You cannot insure a place in heaven if you cannot find your place here on Earth. And our place right now is to stand up and do something. Our place is to spread the word and let people know what this world is coming to. Our place is to not be selfish, to not seek our own comfort and to not leave a ball of dust behind us for our children, for our grandchildren, for our nieces, nephews and our neighbor’s children. Take responsibility! Take charge of your life. Quit being so damned content and make some waves for once! If I hear one more person say that they don’t want to share a post on facebook because they do not want to upset their friends, I’m going to reach through that monitor and slap you silly! Wake up! This is not a game!

Maybe it’s time we got back down to Earth. Why? Because that is where we are needed the most. Heaven can wait! Maybe it’s time we made the connection. Maybe it’s time we finally sat down and watched Earthlings! Yeah! I’m talking to you! Pull your chair up and pay attention. Watch it now. It will change your life! Then you can see how you can leave a tangible gift behind. You can see how to leave a reward just because you care. Then you can believe in Santa again, because he is you!

Imagine it’s the early 1940s: World War II. Hitler is engaged in perpetrating the most horrendous atrocity of the twentieth century. He and his army are attempting to take over the world and eliminate all Jewish people in the process. Something must be done! Hitler must be stopped. He’s about to envelop this entire planet in a dark cloud of evil. Not only will the Jewish race be extinct, we will all be his slaves. The world…

The world will suffer by his hands.

The world is angry! The world is crying out to stop Hitler before he can go any further. Every day that passes is a day he can kill more innocent human beings.

But there is another cry. There is another collective of voices in the crowd. They are not demanding that Hitler be stopped in his tracks by any means necessary. They have a different idea! They think that we should engage Germany in dialogue. They believe that debates would be most effective to stop the Holocaust and not hurt the German Army’s feelings. They want to give the German Army a big hug and tell them just how much they are loved. Besides, the soldiers are just doing their jobs and they believe that what they are doing is right. In fact, in Germany it is perfectly legal to take Jewish people as captives, abuse them and slaughter them. It is legal to bring the Jewish people to extinction because “the Jews are pests.”

There is a holocaust going on right now in Taiji, Japan. Dolphins are being taken captive, abused and slaughtered. If you are thinking, “Oh! But those are dolphins. That’s different!” then maybe you haven’t heard that dolphins are just as intelligent as people and have even been declared by the scientific community that they should be given “non-human person status.” If you have heard it and you are still hollering to hug the fishermen, then you just don’t believe it! That sets you apart from the majority of us that do. That shows why you aren’t as serious about stopping this holocaust as we are. That demonstrates why you think we should take the time to “create internal dialogue” and not apply external pressure. Meanwhile, yet another dolphin can die!

Well, guess what! I believe that dolphins are worth more than the time it would take to give your hugs and have your debates. I believe that the killings need to stop NOW! We can patch up hurt feelings later. We are talking about lives here; lives of innocent sentient beings. I do not want to see another one lost at the hands of the Taiji Nazis!

So, how do we stop it right now? We can’t, but Sting could! If he would just march himself down to Taiji right now and become a Cove Guardian for a few weeks, that would do the trick. The fishermen would be fools to attempt a hunt while Sting is there, especially when you consider the media presence. While Sting is in Taiji, Japanese citizens would flock to The Cove. They just love celebrities. While the Japanese people are in Taiji, they will be educated by Sting and the other Cove Guardians on what is happening there. Libby and Nicole can even break out the videos for everyone. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that this will work!

But let’s face it. Sting is like a butterfly, not a bee. He is one of those voices in the crowd that says we should take a slow approach while dolphins are being slaughtered. He contradicts himself. He said, “I think we only ever evolve as a species when we’re in crisis.” Then he said, “You can’t separate the way we treat animals from the way we treat each other.” This man does not believe in the intelligence of the majestic sentient dolphins that are being killed. If you can’t separate the way we treat animals from the way we treat each other, then we should not be trying to negotiate with and enlighten Hitler! Think about it!

So what do we do? We have to get the attention of the stars and we have to do it now! Send links of the video, “Where Are You Now?” and “The Cove -PSA” to every one of your local news media publications and stations. Post them in forums, in facebook, MySpace and add them to your YouTube channel. Tweet them, email them and even download them to put on a DVD so you can play them at your local TV appliances store. Send the link to this article to every activist you know and post it in every activist site you can. If you have your own blog or website, please copy and paste this entire article to it. I don’t care one iota if you mention my name or give me credit. It will take you two seconds longer to do that and that is two seconds too many. What is important is that we save our dolphin friends, NOW!

If you are a star and you are on set, what better way to promote your movie than to pack up the whole film crew and head to Taiji Right Now! If you really want to stop the slaughter, you will go now! There is nothing stopping you unless you really just don’t consider the dolphins that important.

Porter

Christopher Porter has an extensive resume’ rooted in a history of marine mammal training and trading. Since 1991 he has worked with dolphins, sea lions and killer whales in Greece, Italy, Solomon Islands and British Columbia. He is now the founder of FreeThePod.org. He is a changed man and I consider him an inspiration and a breath of fresh air.

As one of my facebook friends, I have had the honor of chatting with Mr. Porter on a few occasions. After releasing my post ‘Georgia Aquarium Broken Homes’ I decided to ask Chris a question. Here is the conversation.

Holise Cleveland III January 17 at 8:27am

Hello Chris! Do you think that a dolphin born in captivity can be trained to survive in the wild?

Christopher Porter January 17 at 11:03am

This video [of Viti the dolphin, included below] shows what a captive born dolphin can do. His story saddens me as it should not of gotten to the point of himself alone but the WHOLE STORY did show me what is possible… eating live fish, going out to the ocean etc… I think it can be done successfully through proper time and resources. Viti showed how much is possible on his own.
I always tell people that if we can tame a wild animal … of course we can wild a tame one. They have years of evolution, gentics and god given ability to survive. Just as we do. Give them the right opportunities they will show what is possible.

Captive born conservation happens with zoo animals like birds all the time. The arguments for marine animals is based on people’s fears that “the family” is the only way an organism can live. As life shows us if one travels around the world… children learn to provide for themselves all over the world.

Viti learned to eat live fish, show him where the fish was and introduce him to some other wild dolphins it would of been done. It is my biggest push with my work now to challenge everyone to think bigger and humbler, we are smart so let us act like it and do more for wild conservation.

Introduction of captive born animals would show that it is possible. The problem is that everyone does not want to try. Even the biggest activists. I had Ric O’Barry’s son tell me they would never try, then when I was showing what Viti was doing still could not get them to support me for the release. Too scared of press!

Hope that answers your question. If not ask away.

IT HAS TO BE ABOUT THE ANIMALS!
FTA-For The Animals

Holise Cleveland III January 17 at 11:12am

The reason I asked is because I hear so much crap about how The Cove information may be compromised in regards to captivity being linked to dolphin drives. I thought it is best to simply take that out of the equation and concentrate on showing the evils of captivity on its own.

Thank you so much Chris! If it is alright with you, I would like to post this to my blog. I think the world should know this. Thanks again!

Christopher Porter January 17 at 11:19am

I am an open book publish anything FTA. Regarding the misinformation thing… that is what I talked to Ric about … challenge the industry to prove that animals can be released back to the wild. That way the aquarium industry argument is null and void and reduces simply to captivity being a form of education and awareness that the public needs. Right now there are many issues that allow the both sides to dilute the arguments. Same thing happens in politics. Keep complicating the matter so that people get confused and turn off.

Your approach to reduce it to a single item is exactly what needs to happen. The fishermen probably really don’t care about the captive industry side… there is a huge middle man industry on that one that covers many continents that is fueling that one.

Isolate the fishermen to find a way they no longer care to use their skill to bring the dolphins in. That is the quickest way to extinguish it. I tried to do that in Solomons but people don’t like big challenges or don’t follow through.

IT IS POSSIBLE!

I posted ‘Georgia Aquarium Broken Homes’ to his facebook profile wall. In the article, I made a rather harsh statement.

“Anyone who can justify a family being split apart, must justify their own broken home in the same way. I do not doubt that trainers love their subjects. In the story ‘Misery’ the woman crippled that man so that he could never leave. She loved him in her own way. Trainers should not aid the warden in crippling these magnificent creatures. They should instead speak up to have them freed.”

This was in no way directed at Chris. Nevertheless, he kindly addressed my ridiculous outburst.

Christopher Porter
Holise… give you the answer you are looking for on how it is justified… within the industry there is many of us that feel that there is something wrong holding the animals captive. But I did it and others do it based on the idea that these animals are ambassadors to their wild counterparts and are part of the process of educating and making the public aware of their plight. I realized that our effect was not as great as we need on our planet and we should figure a way to build a better wild and not better aquariums. A new aquarium these days are in the range of 200 million plus for dolphins. This debate on the effectiveness of the process is up at the Directors and scientist level where they think even experimentation is part of the learning process. So the people looking after the animals do it out of love with the thought if they don’t look after that individual well somebody else might that does not worry so much about them. It is a tricky road back and forth.

What needs to happen is an emergence of people that care for the animals and talk openly what is possible if both sides work together. IF both sides work together and admit what they do wrong and admit what they do right… they can work on a cooperative solution that will engage the general public more into wild conservation.

Aquariums think if they don’t exist nothing at all will get done in the wild, activists think if they don’t exist nothing will get done for the animals… the TRUTH of the matter is that NOTHING WILL GET DONE without engaging the General Public into helping both the wild and the animals in it. The mass of the public is indifferent to it. It needs us working together with our passion to make them turn on to helping this world and not relying on aquariums or activists to do it for them. There is not enough activists or aquariums to fix the marine animal’s problems.

Sorry for the long answer but this is my passion after years of watching and working around the world in the hope that we were making a difference. We can make a difference but egos have to be left at the door and everybody needs to meet at the table to find the best solution FTA!

I hear about people who seem to be activists just for the brownie points.
I hear about people who seem to be activists just for the brownie points. They are more concerned with their own praise than anything else. We should be wary of those who seem to have the animals’ best interest in mind, when in fact they obviously have their own agenda. This article will hopefully cause some people to look in the mirror and help them see if they are being completely selfless. In order to grow and be a better person than the day before, we must all re-evaluate ourselves sometime.

“Sometimes people would be much more productive and much better off if they checked their egos at the door.” ~ Dee Reid

This is true, but someone who was raised by egotistical parents may have a real struggle ahead of them, even if they realize they are not being truly selfless. Just as you and I cannot understand a person’s need for self proclamation, they may not understand that we do not have such a need. I have been asked by these types what my true agenda is. They are dead certain that I have ulterior motives. Just as a compulsive liar assumes that “everyone is a liar,” these egotists assume we are not the genuine article and they conclude that no one is.

The real test for one’s self is to practice selfless acts and tell no one. For example: help a blind person across the street or donate money to a worthy cause. Do you find it irresistible to tell people what you have done? It’s best to do these things with the intention of telling no one as a practice to overcome selfish idiosyncrasies. Only then will you discover that nothing is more personally gratifying than a completely selfless act.

Certainly, there are exceptions. If you are the administrator of a facebook page, blog or website, announcing what you have done can be incentive for your followers to do the same. For me, this is uncomfortable. I do not like to toot my horn, but it has its advantages in rare situations. Nevertheless, if I give money to an organization, there is no need to declare the amount donated.

I don’t seek popularity, but I do want my blog to be influential. I want as many facebook friends as possible and I would like tons of Twitter followers. The reasons are quite simple. I want to reach as many people as I can. I want to enlighten those who are not aware of this world’s atrocities and I want to encourage those who are. I want them to take the links, photos, videos and insights that I share and use them to help make this world a better place. I don’t care if they give me credit for it. That’s not the point!

If I have a thousand facebook friends who share a link with all of their friends, I have actually done something good by sharing that one link. It is only obvious that having 2,000 friends make such a task even more effective. In the end, it doesn’t matter if people know my name. It only matters that I have done something and since my children see all that I do, they will know that I did my best. They are the ones that matter. Even if they don’t say, “Wow, Dad! You’re doing such a great job,” I know that they know I’ve done my best, no matter the outcome.

So, don’t be too hard on the egotists. If they are doing something to make this world a better place, then they are already better people than the ones who are doing nothing. Keep in mind that their selfishness is their parents’ fault and they have a difficult road ahead of them, but they are trying. We must keep in mind that there are only two types of people in this world that really matter. As Louie Psihoyos said, “To me, you’re either an activist or an inactivist.”
