Young Humpback Rescued From Gill Net

Gill nets range from 200 feet to more than a mile in length, they are weighted at the bottom and held upright by floats at the top, creating what some have deemed "walls of death." Fishes are unable to see the netting, and unless the mesh size is larger than the fish, they get stuck. When they try to back out, the netting catches them by their gills or fins, and many suffocate. Others struggle so desperately in the sharp mesh that they bleed to death.

Because gill nets are set and then left unmonitored, trapped fishes may suffer for days. Many bleed to death before the ship returns to take them out of the ocean. Those who make it to the deck alive are ripped out of the net by hand and suffocate or are cut open while still alive. Fishes who were caught deep in the ocean suffer from decompression, and the extreme change in pressure can cause their stomachs to be forced out of their mouths.

The resistance of nylon to decay, and the large amounts of netting which are deployed in some driftnet fisheries, has lead to a further fear that segments of netting which are inevitably lost during fishing, or which are deliberately discarded, may continue to “fish” for an indefinite period of time, and are capable of entangling birds and marine mammals near the surface for years.

This video is an example of discarded gill netting, there are countless examples like this one occurring every day across the globe. Thankfully, this one had a happy ending.

Each year, in Carloforte, Sardinia, hundreds of blue fin tunas are caught in traps while they migrate to their breeding ground and later slaughtered. Animal Equality, has documented both the natural behaviour of tunas underwater, and the plight of the blue fin tunas who are brutally killed. Blue fin tunas are able to feel pain and suffering like any other animal. This slaughter in Carloforte is a cruel practice that must stop immediately.

INVESTIGATION FINDINGS:

• Unnaturally high densities of tuna at the catching stage presented a significant stressor to individual animals.

• Fish were dragged from the ocean with giant sharp metal pick hooks and brought on-board ships.

• Extensive tissue damage was caused by the piercing, blunt hooks, and this is likely to have inflicted acute pain on the fish, who were still alive and conscious.

• The suspension of the tunas' body weight caused the further tearing of tissues as a result of gravity working against the hook.

• The struggling, frantic movements of the tuna whilst suspended in the air indicated that the fish were in pain and stress.

• Fish were observed being repeatedly stabbed with knives in the thoracic (chest) region and major arteries, causing death via exsanguination.

• Animals were slaughtered in the presence of conspecifics which is likely to cause additional stress.

Covering 72 percent of the Earth and supplying half its oxygen, the oceans are our planet's life support system.

However, they do not "give us" all the "seafood" we need - we steal billions of individuals from the oceans, and we are also killing the oceans by doing so.

We have already lost over 90% of large fishes. What will it take for people to realise the world's oceans are in a desperate situation?
