If the meaning of words and the purposes of social movements are socially constructed, does there come a day when the building is complete? On that day, does someone get to proclaim: “Construction is finished, girls and boys, no one else gets to have their say. From this day forth meanings and purpose are set in stone.” Maybe so, but I doubt it.
It’s a messy business, negotiating meaning and purpose in a world full of others who have a stake in what happens next, but this messy business is the only one we have. I suppose that we’ll have to learn to live with each other and our differences as we try to build the best lives we can. The present is emerging, always emerging, we are always building the here in the now. Life goes on in a perpetual construction zone: grab your tools and come along.
