Fighting for animal liberation and an end to speciesism

My first instinct on reading a story like this is to think of the power of cultural speciesism and the fact that the ideology of animal use - and the characterisation of other animals as "lesser-than" beings - is institutionalised in deeply speciesist societies.

However, is there another (complimentary?) explanation - that people like this are crazy?

Who is it you're calling crazy? The killers in the story, or the society that punishes these killers and not everyone who supports institutionalized animal abuse? Obviously both are bad--but I'm glad these deaths were taken at least somewhat seriously and the newspaper didn't come up with a joke headline. I think we can all put ourselves in the place of whoever was responsible for those geese--maybe a rescuer or rehabilitator? We can imagine what those teenagers might do if they lived next door and had the opportunity to break into our homes when we're at work. Maybe a response to the story in the comment section would help readers make the connections if they haven't already.
