ARZone is proud to present Dr. Roger Yates as this weekend's Live Guest Chat.
Dr. Roger Yates is a lecturer in sociology, a vegan of more than 30 years, a former Executive Committee member of the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV), a former Animal Liberation Front (ALFSG) Northern press officer and co-founder of the Fur Action Group.
Roger became fully involved in the British grassroots animal movement in 1979, becoming active as a vegan animal rights advocate. Roger has been involved with groups such as Merseyside Sea Shepherd and the Orkney Seal Campaigns, NALL (Northern Animal Liberation League), the Edelson Action Group who effectively closed down Edelson Fur Co. with the "fur pledge" idea, which Roger originated, asking people to boycott Department stores due to their fur department. Roger also opened and ran the first "Animal Rights Shop" in Liverpool.
In 1987, Roger was sentenced to four years' imprisonment for conspiracy to commit criminal damage on behalf of the ALF. He absconded during the trial and was on the run for two years, before being apprehended and serving his sentence. After his release in 1990 he began an academic study of animal protectionism and social movements, obtaining his PhD from the university of Wales, Bangor in 2005 on the subject of human/nonhuman relations.
His MA thesis was an examination of the British animal protection movement and his 2005 PhD dissertation, "The Social Construction of Human Beings and Other Animals in Human-Nonhuman Relations". He maintains two blogs, "On Human-Nonhuman Relations", a sociological exploration of speciesism, and "Animal Rights Violations."
Roger is co-founder of Vegan Ireland, a non profit and voluntary organisation concerned with the promotion of the vegan philosophy and lifestyle in Ireland, and a representative of The Irish Animal Education Trust, which was formed in 2009 to develop and distribute educational materials that address animal use and treatment.
Roger has agreed to share with ARZone members, his history and incredible knowledge gained by his grassroots participation and leadership in the Animal Rights Movement over the past 30 years.
This is an event for which questions must be pre-registered in order to have direct dialogue with Roger at length, and may be done by contacting either Carolyn, Jason or Dan through ARZone.
ARZone promotes rational discourse and intelligent dialogue and encourages participation in this experience.
