Fighting for animal liberation and an end to speciesism

The ARZone Admin Team have made the decision to participate in the “Live Below the Line” Worldwide Challenge, a campaign that's changing the way people think about poverty—and making a huge difference—by challenging everyday people to live on the equivalent of the extreme poverty line for 5 days.

Every day, all around the world, people are suffering because of poverty and inequality. This is unjust and unfair. ARZone is joining the global initiative to Live Below the Line in order to make these problems meaningful in concrete ways. Please help us Live Below the Line by donating to this worthy cause. Together we can fight extreme poverty - your support will make a difference today.

It will be a tough week for everyone. We'll do it because while we struggle to Live Below the Line for one week, there are 1.4 billion people doing it every day. That's over 60 times the population of Australia - forced every day to live in the most desperate and degrading poverty.

We encourage ARZone members to donate to this cause - even as little as $1 would be very helpful and appreciated. Donate to fight poverty as part of the ARZone Team here: https://www.livebelowtheline.com/team/animal-rights-zone

We encourage all ARZone members to join our team and help raise money and awareness for this important and worthy cause. Won’t you please join us?

WHAT IS EXTREME POVERTY?
In 2005, the World Bank defined the extreme poverty line as living on less than US$1.25 (the current equivalent of $2 in Australia) per day. For more detail, check out how we calculated this figure.

HOW MANY PEOPLE CURRENTLY LIVE IN EXTREME POVERTY?
Today, there are 1.4 billion people living below the extreme poverty line. That’s over 60 times the population of Australia.

Since 1985, a combined global effort has meant that the percentage of the world's population living in extreme poverty has more than halved, falling from 52% to 25%.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO LIVE IN EXTREME POVERTY?
Close to a quarter of the world's population lives below the extreme poverty line, which means they have just AU$2 a day or less to cover all their daily expenses - housing, education, health, transport and food.

Surviving on such a tiny amount, almost all their income must be spent on food. Even then, they can generally only afford two basic meals a day. They have little to no money left for the other necessities of life - and if anything ever goes wrong they have no safety net to rely on. They are often the victims of broken systems: lacking access to the education, services and the job opportunities they need to break the cycle of poverty.

HOW IS LIVE BELOW THE LINE MAKING A DIFFERENCE?
Live Below the Line seeks to combat extreme poverty in two distinct ways: raising funds for educational opportunities in the developing world, and creating widespread awareness of this important issue (HINT: conversations are the key!).

While extreme poverty can seem overwhelming, Live Below the Line is a straightforward way to make a clear impact. It will change your life, and by sharing your experience with others you can help raise awareness of the injustice faced by 1.4 billion people in the world.

The money you raise for the Oaktree Foundation will help fund educational projects that tackle extreme poverty at its source. By challenging yourself to Live Below the Line you can have a direct and meaningful impact on extreme poverty in our region.

Live Below the Line is an innovative awareness and fundraising campaign that's making a huge difference in the fight against extreme poverty.

Quite simply, we’re building a movement of passionate people willing and able to make a meaningful difference to those who need it most.

Hi Bronwyn,

Live Below the Line is a campaign that's changing the way people think about poverty—and making a huge difference—by challenging everyday people to live on the equivalent of the extreme poverty line for 5 days.

Today, around 25 thousand people, mostly children, died due to poverty and poverty related causes.

This campaign focuses on educational projects because they believe that education is the key to empowering people to break out of the cycle of extreme poverty. Many young people who are living in extreme poverty face a severe lack of access to education and are unable to gain the skills necessary to find employment. Live Below the Line believe this is the key to working toward ending these tragedies.

This amazing website explains a little more about extreme global poverty and even introduces readers to representatives of individuals who have died, today, this hour, due to extreme poverty. I think it is an important website for anyone who is unsure of the urgency and desperation that we are facing on a global scale in order to make some difference for these humans.

This website explains where the money raised by the Live Below the Line campaign goes, and why it goes there:

Please feel free to ask any further questions, if the information above doesn't explain fully.

Hi,

Is this a vegan initiative?  ie. will those who benefit from the funds raised be encouraged to go vegan?

Thanks,

Bronwyn (from Ireland).
