Fighting for animal liberation and an end to speciesism

Here is the article: http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/local/articles/2012/03/23/...

Assuming conditions do improve for animal in modern farms and over time (I'll be conservative and say many, MANY decades) the worst abuses of modern animal farming (some of the worst abuses being living conditions, castration, dehorning, mother-child separation, murder of male baby chicks and male baby cows, the use gestation crates) come to an end, but the exploitation of animals for food continues.  How then will animal advocates continue advocating for veganism?  Might it become harder for activists to convince people to become vegan?  Maybe by definition, because all of the worst abuses would have ended, by that time society, at least Western society where the majority of animal activism is taking place, will have been "ripened up" enough to the idea of veganism and a larger portion will take animals' interests seriously.  If it will become harder to convince people to become vegan as conditions improve, I think Tim Gier may have a point about mass veganism happening when external conditions are such that there is no other viable choice (e.g., when the Earth's resources are become stretched too thin to feed meat, dairy, and eggs to 9 billion people).  But shouldn't activists today leverage the horrid conditions and practices of animal farming to argue for veganism, for once--or if--those conditions are fixed, activists won't be able to leverage them to argue for veganism (again, this may not be a problem if society has been ripened up enough to the idea of veganism).

That's why promoting veganism via animal welfare arguments alone isnt the way to go. Its a massive vital reason to go vegan, yes, but most certainly isnt the only reason.

Other points that always need to be highlighted are:

- Devastating environmental affects

- Starving povety stricken countries/communities being raped of their crops to feed animals in the meat market.

- Humans being herbivores.

- The fact almost all human illness and disease is caused by what we eat and could be eradicated by a raw vegan diet.

- Viewing animals as sentient beings and pushing to educate people further on their complex behavioural and cognitive abilities.
