Squeezed through a corridor of nets, sliced open and bled to death: The 'cruel' 600 year-old fishing ritual animal rights campaigners want banned

'Cruel': Once caught, the fish are cut and left to bleed to death. Fishermen believe this method improves the flavour of the meat

Bluefin tuna: The huge fish are then cut up and sold. Many end up in Japan as sushi or sashimi

An undercover operation carried out by Animal Rights Equality captured footage of the ceremony and the group plans to use it to lobby politicians in Rome for a ban on bluefin tuna fishing.

The activist who infiltrated a fishing party in Carloforte, near Sardinia, told The Times: 'I was very frustrated. When you're filming something so heavy and cruel, it was a bit painful. You could see the fish were suffering.'

Katherine van Ekhart, president of Sentient at the Australian institute of animal ethics insisted, despite claims to the contrary, fish could feel pain.

Controversial: During a Mattanza, tuna are coaxed through a corridor of nets that narrows until it reaches a final 'room of death'

'Room of Death: La Mattanza translated means 'tuna massacre'

After watching Animal Equality's footage, she told The Times: 'Pain and stress can be witnessed through the struggling and thrashing movements of the tuna.'

The fish are bled to death because it's believed to make the meat more tender.

A number of restaurateurs, including Giorgio Locatelli and Gordon Ramsay, have boycotted bluefin tuna - but much of the fish caught in Italy is sent to Japan where it's used in sushi and sashimi.

Guilio Greco, a manager of one of Italy's leading tuna companies insisted the ritual is the only effective way to catch the fish.

He said: 'The violence is not any more than by catching them with a hook.

The Mattanza is an old system that is sustainable for the next few centuries. Hook fishing could only take 15 per cent of the tuna you get in the Mattanza.'
