Fighting for animal liberation and an end to speciesism

Keith Mann ~ Suggested reading material / Excerpts from "From Dusk Til Dawn".

Here are just a few excerpts from Keith's book "From Dusk Til Dawn" which we recommend ARZone members read prior to participation in Keith's ARZone chat this weekend:

While few would mourn the passing of a vivisector or slaughter man, fewer still think it’s right to start killing them…ALF “extremists” are often accused…of having a reckless disregard for human life and an inhuman
desire to injure or kill people. Nothing could be further from the truth. Apart
from maintaining a policy of non-violence…since its formation the ALF has never
targeted human beings. If the intension was to harm the animal abusers whose
property is the focus, those targeting could surely be picked off at will. But
there is a conscious effort made to avoid physical violence.

From Dusk ‘til Dawn – p. 58, 59.

“I was a Labour voter all my life and I was so excited about the future for the animals and all of us when we got them in that we had a party. We made them what they were and look at what they’ve done. I’m ashamed.Politicians have lost all credibility. The ALF is the only hope the animals
have.” Nancy Phipps, quoted in From Dusk ‘til
Dawn – p. 365.

The Animal Liberation Front in reality isn’t so much an organisation, more a banner – a title, an umbrella name, or state of mind if
the like – under which individuals and groups of people claim responsibilityfor illegal actions, which are designed to either directly or indirectly help
the cause of animals. Anyone can be an ALF activist: there is no membership
form to fill in – all that is required is that activists are vegan or at least
vegetarian. It isn’t a dismissal or kneecapping offence or anything like that –
it just kind of goes without saying, and someone failing to recognise this
obvious contradiction is missing the whole point. A primary undertaking is that
all actions should cause no physical harm to other humans or animals. There is
no hidden agenda.

From Dusk ‘til Dawn – pp. 55-6.

Back at the safe house we discovered that the mice – 700 of them – were at various stages of Botox poisoning tests, their tails marked to
indicate the dose level administered. Some were due injections later thatmorning, for many others it was already too late. We fee and watered and put
them to bed…

From Dusk ‘til Dawn – p. 629.

Since the early meetings between sabs and hunters here has been serious violence, and the victims have tended to by saboteurs. Hunt supporters – despite the impression given by the media and the hints – have suffered
remarkably little violence in reality. In 1976 in the UK, League Against Cruel
Sports activist William Sweet was shot and killed during an altercation with a
shooting fanatic. Others have dies since and the list of walking wounded is
much, much, longer, each a shocking story of extreme violence and police and
media indifference.

Thirty-four-year-old Eddie Coulston hadn’t been sabbing
before when he joined hundreds of others at the annual gathering of coursing
supporters at the repulsive Waterloo Cup hare-coursing spectacle at Altcar near
Liverpool in 1984. Coulston was there less than an hour when his skull was
cracked open by coursing supporter Paul Willingale using a shooting stick.
Astonishingly, the assailant was later sentenced to just six months in prison.
Eddie Coulston had to undergo lifesaving brain surgery to remove bone splinters
and a clot, and was left afflicted with epileptic fits. The very same day he
was attacked, coursers killed one of their own in a drunken brawl. The violence
surrounding this event brought home just how dangerous a crack over the head
could be – something many hundreds of saboteurs have suffered and narrowly avoided.
Many such incidents have been filmed and photographed by sabs, hunt monitors
and independent observers, many witnessed by police, yet the number of these
thugs sent to prison can be counted on the fingers of one hand.
