Fighting for animal liberation and an end to speciesism

Breaking Veganism - when activism supports animal expoitation

In this new HumaneMyth essay, James LaVeck and Jenny Stein of Tribe of Heart explain how the co-option of this year's national animal rights conference (AR 2012) by corporatized "animal protection" groups was the culmination of a years-long effort to convince well-meaning activists to participate in initiatives that ultimately enrich the animal exploiting industry.

This latest encroachment by the animal-welfare industrial complex was a watershed moment which compelled a group of long-time activists to intervene. They describe how they helped plan a parallel event, called "Justice for Animals, Respect for Advocates," in the same hotel, and how the AR 2012 organizers worked with the hotel to aggressively block it from taking place.

In response, numerous activists, including some AR 2012 sponsors and speakers, defied the censorship by crowding into a hotel suite known as Room 1212, where together they committed to working toward a more holistic, inclusive movement based on the values of truth, integrity, and respect.

In the interests of fairness and rational discourse, FARM have made this statement in response to the controversy surrounding AR2012:
