Melbourne man's fight to keep his pet sheep 'Dolly'

A Melbourne man has lost a battle with the Supreme Court to keep his much loved family pet – a sheep named Dolly.

Vu Ho has already spent his life savings on the case, but he's not about to give up the fight.
To most people she's just another sheep.

To the Hos, Dolly is part of the family, which is why they've spent $60,000 trying save her.
“Her love for me is indescribable,” says Vu Ho. “It’s very hard to describe.”

The local council says 11-year-old Dolly, also known as Baa, is not a pet – she's livestock and has no place on a residential street. Mr Ho and his son refused to accept that, so took the council to the Supreme Court, and lost. “I guess at the heart of it we're fighting to keep our pet,” says son Nghia Ho.

The Hos aren't ready to hand Dolly over yet. They plan to appeal.

“I can sell a part of this house,” says Mr Ho. “Sell the part that belongs to me, and then we'll have money [for the appeal].” Mr Ho also lost his mechanics business last year when his landlord sold the premises, but he says that gives him more time to spend with Dolly, who missed him when he was at work.

“She's a very emotional animal, so she would cry until I came back,” he says.

The Supreme Court is now deciding whether Mr Ho should pay the council's legal costs as well. His total bill could be more than $150,000.

“The council is disappointed in the first instance that the plaintiff decided to take this matter to the Supreme Court,” says Greater Dandenong Council chief executive John Bennie. “It could have been resolved in other jurisdictions.” While the council says Dolly should be "barred" from the family home, Mr Ho's neighbours aren't complaining.

“He loves it like a dog, like I love my dog and my cat, and I think that's admirable,” says neighbour Rachel Altamura.

The Hos say they can't put a price on Dolly and are prepared to take the case to the highest court in Australia.
