Fighting for animal liberation and an end to speciesism
The President of Taiwan, Ma Ying-jeou 马英九, attended a forum organized by Animal Protection Group on January 10 2014 in Taipei. President Ma hopes to hear the suggestions and concerns of the people of Taiwan about the rights and welfare of stray animals. Ma Ying-jeou said his government is taking the problem of stray animals seriously and always advocate for adopting a pet instead of purchasing one.
President Ma became the Mayor of Taipei in 1998. He adopted a stray dog in 1999 and named the dog Ma Xiao-jeou 马小九.
Back then Ma Xiao-jeou was sick. It cost President Ma more than NT$10,000 to treat his friend.
