Last night, there was a completely bogus article circulating the web that indicated Michael Vick had been in a car accident and broke both of his legs. Obviously, this was 100% false. However, that did not stop “animal advocates” and alleged “vegans” from reposting it immediately without doing any fact-checking whatsoever.
What makes it worse, is that these people were saying things “he deserves it” and “thank God,” and “I wish worse would have happened to him.” Not only is this doing a disgusting disservice to the vegan movement, but it’s also just plain stupid. Sadly, this is just the latest example of people who claim to be “vegan,” insinuating they have reverence for all life, but then at the same time espouse hate through violent words and actions.
Let’s be clear that what Michael Vick did to those dogs was sick and morally reprehensible, but it’s no different than what the vast majority of people do to anima.... Using the flawed logic that people who commit atrocities should violently pay for their actions makes completely no sense. With that way of thinking, it would be morally acceptable to walk down the street and break everyones’ legs who isn’t vegan.
Actually, to take that logic even further, it would also be permissible to break everyones’ legs who is vegan as well, assuming they haven’t been vegan since birth. This entire idea that people who cause harm to animals need to repay by having violent force inflicted upon them is so utterly idiotic and truly embarrassing for real vegans who commit to living a life of nonviolence and ahimsa towards all.
The bottom line is that nearly everyone has committed grave atrocities towards animals for significants portions of their lives. On the other hand, you never know what will cause someone to have a change of heart, or when they’ll do it. Prominent vegan activists such as Howard Lyman (a former cattle farmer) and Neal Barnard (a former vivisector) had made a living off torturing and killing animals before they became vegan.
So, please, can we stop this type of violent speech that does nothing but make our movement look hypocritical and extremist? Instead of wasting time posting violent speech on Facebook, perhaps our time could be better spent sending a clear and consistent message and doing something that will actually help animals, like vegan advocacy.
