Nature’s Best Moisturiser

Amanda Rootsey

Heddy Butler, National Manager from The College of Natural Beauty, has generously shared her wealth of knowledge on one of my favourite fruits and it’s beauty benefits!  Take it away Heddy…

Did you know one of nature’s most effective moisturisers can be found in your very own kitchen? Yes beauty addicts – the organic avocado is an ideal chemical-free moisturiser for the face, hair and eye area and is a staple part of my own beauty routine.  This humble fruit contains a nourishing and extremely deep penetrating oil, is rich in vitamins A, D and E, lecithin and potassium, commonly known as the youth mineral. Sound good?

The avocado is a true beauty superfood – the sterolins it contains can help reduce age spots, regenerate and rejuvenate the skin and even help heal sun damage and scars. You can benefit from applying avocado topically or consuming it raw or as an oil which will moisturise the skin from within.

Studies have also shown including avocado oil regularly in the diet significantly increases levels of collagen, a protein which gives skin an appearance of firmness and smoothness which we gradually lose as we get older.

Avocado oil is also easily absorbed into deep tissue, making it an ideal moisturiser for mature skins and those who suffer from psoriasis or eczema. Some even use the oil as a sunscreen! The best part is avocados don’t clog the skin’s pores, which is great for those who suffer from breakouts.

Speaking of spots, avocado and avocado oil can work well to prevent the inflammation of the sebaceous glands, a common cause of acne. It can also remove excess sebum on the skin, unclog hair follicles and remove dead skin cells – all without any side effects.

It's important to remember to choose the right avocado – it should be ripe otherwise it will be difficult to mash and challenging for the beneficial ingredients to penetrate the skin.

Heddy’s Avocado Eye Mask

Simply take thin slices of organic avocado from the fridge and apply to under the eye. Lay back for 20 minutes – bliss! This is a wonderful way to reduce puffiness.
