Hi Heather. Thanks for sharing this beautiful photo of a male Wood Duck (Family - Anatidae, Species - Aix sponsa)
This is what my "Birds of the World" book says about Wood Ducks.
They live in wooded lakes and rivers and feeds on acorns, nuts, seeds, green plants, and small invertebrates. They are one of the few ducks that perch readily on branches. Another characteristic feature is that they nests in trees. Soon after hatching, the ducklings jump down from the nest at their mother's call, and follow her to the water.
Nest = A tree-hole or nest-box, lined with down.
Distribution = North America to Cuba
Migration = Partial migrant
Habitat = Lakes, rivers, and vicinity, and open forest - i.e with more space between the trees.

There's a picture in my book of him, so I'm confident that this is who he is. In the description it also mentions that they (the males, or both males and females) have white edges to flank feathers, finely spotted breast, bare red eye-rings, and that they raise their crests in display.

Thanks.X (:>
