Fighting for animal liberation and an end to speciesism

Sitting back watching TV tonight Channel 10 was doing a little bit of heavy promotion for their 2011 News and Current Affairs line up. George Negus came on to give us a little promo of what he will be doing regarding the new lineup.

The thing that got me interested in what he was saying was one simple statement that he made. Now the quote isn’t exactly verbatim, though the general gist of it should be ok. He said something along the lines of He asks the 1 question that other reporters are afraid to ask. That is Why?. He goes on to say that this is one of the most under asked questions by reporters these days.

This got me thinking, and I realised that it is also one of the most avoided questions within the animal movement too.

When was the last time that anyone heard any of the welfare groups ask that question?

Instead of campaigning for this or that, and then offering them the solution as well we need to start asking “why?”

Instead of campaigning for an increase in cage size or removal of cages for layer hens, let’s ask “Why are they kept in there in the first place?”
Instead of campaigning for the removal of sow stalls, let’s ask “Why are they in there in the first place?”
Instead of having to justify my decision to be vegan, let’s ask “Why are you still eating meat?”

I believe that if we started asking this question of those in animal agri-business instead of offering them the soultions to a problem we created, there is a good chance that the Animal Rights movement will
start getting stronger.

And who knows, the naysayers may even see a vegan world in their lifetime…

Yer but you know them Cam, they all come back with all the usual b.s. excuses and brainwashed responses.  My question in my mind is "how can they sleep at night knowing they are eating enslaved and tortured animals?" xxJ

Hi Lisa,

Thank you for the comment.

It is one of the easiest questions to ask, yet one of the hardest to answer :)

Love your post!  Thank you!  Very good advice.  I will try to keep this in mind and incorporate it.
