Counting world vegans

This is an ambitious project to try and confirm numbers of vegans.

It takes really only a minute to do.

Walk for Farm Sanctuary

On September 14th I will be participating in the Walk for Farm Animals in Rochester, New York. Every fall, thousands of compassionate people gather to raise funds and change hearts for farm animals through the Walk for Farm Animals, a series of non-competitive walking events held each year in cities across the United States and Canada. Others participate virtually through our “Sleep In for Farm Animals.” Walkers raise vital funds for Farm Sanctuary’s life-saving work and promote kindness…

Urgent help needed for the Canberra kangaroos

The Australian Society for Kangaroos has been in court this week trying to stop a cull of kangaroos indigenous to the area.

These culls have been almost annual, based on the ACT Government line that they are in 'plague' proportions. The real problem is that the area is the seat of Federal Government with head offices for public sector agencies, and the ACT Government relies heavily on the revenue it receives from the continual turnover in housing and the explosion of building…

Trophy Hunting—A Way of Life?

Sporadically, I watch the “Outdoor” channel on cable TV in a recurring attempt to understand the mind-set of trophy hunters and why they seem able to take the life of a wild animal so glibly and gleefully without regard for its suffering, respect for its natural habitation, or (in some cases) concern for its nursing offspring.

I still don’t understand their apparent callousness. They seem devoid of empathy. Some have suggested…

Illegal Ivory Trade Threatens African Elephants

Despite the 1990 ban on ivory trade, elephants continue to be killed by poachers. According to Defenders of Wildlife, at the turn of the 20th century, there were a few million African elephants and about 100,000 Asian elephants. Today, there are an estimated 450,000 to 700,000 African elephants and between 35,000 and 40,000 wild Asian elephants. Defenders of Wildlife is working through the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) to maintain a ban on the sale of ivory…

Safari to Namibia?

Looking for motivation to sign pledge to boycott Namibia?

Each seal skin sells for $7.00 It takes between 6-8 skins to make a fur coat. One fur coat sells for $30 000.00

The money does not stay in Namibia to benefit the economically disadvantaged workers, who have their human dignity assaulted on a daily basis…

This video bought me to tears!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Z8NTEVVc2w

This video is the most disgusting thing i have ever seen, i have always had a soft spot for animals and this is just heart breaking to watch.

I find it sad that this is the only way for people to be shocked into change, with such graphic material. I truly am saddened by what humans have come to.

I don't like preaching to people because it is their lives. but when…

stop judging

i'm usualy not one to get annoyed with what people do, but when people criticise us for not eating animal products .. it gets me a tad upset! they dont have to be vegan or believe in the same things as us.. but they don't have to be rude and think of us as any less a person then them.. just because of what we eat and believe! i really hope people will change their ways soon.. because I'm getting a tiny bit agitated!

Email from the "Get Britain Out" campaign Jan 2013

Have just received the following:

QUOTE

. . . My article for The Commentator exposed the brutal new EU animal testing rules that came into force on 1st January.  This legislation allows all sorts disturbing activities to take place including the beheading of birds, the bludgeoning of puppies and kittens and animal testing on stray pets – which could in fact be your own pets at some time in the future. . .  The EU clearly does not care about the rights of animals, who cannot…

Apes bred for medical experiments in Victoria

This was the headline article in the Sunday Age today, one of our major newspapers.  While I am pleased to see it given such prominence it is nevertheless distressing to read what we all probably know or suspect, that 'ethics committees' and a bit of a joke.

For anyone who feels so inclined I think it would be appropriate to contact Monash University, and the National health and Medical Research Council which you can Google to express ourtage and be advocates for the…

Having a wistful moment

One of my favourite poems by DH Lawrence.  I was reminded of this today when a young woman in a shop squashed a spider on the counter just as I said 'DON'T" and before I could stop her. I said 'why did you do that?' and she asked what I'd have done with it and I said 'put it outside.'  But I recalled being afraid of spiders as a child, my mother telling me I was afraid of them,  and how long it took me to treat them respectfully.

A snake came to my…
