Is ARZone Saying What Its Members Want To Hear?

ARZone is pleased to present the next in our series of Member’s Workshops.

ARZone aims to host Member’s Workshops as an opportunity to involve all members in a conversation about issues and opinions raised in previous Guest Q&A sessions or podcasts, in order to think critically about those questions and answers, to involve all members in open dialogue, to explore certain issues more fully, and to consider the ways we can all become more informed and better advocates for other animals.

The proposed topic for this week’s Workshop is “Is ARZone saying what it’s members want to hear?”

In her recent ARZone podcast, Lynne Yates discussed the language animal advocates use when they talk about human relationships with nonhuman animals. For example, a review of the ARZone transcripts will show that our guests often use words such as “intersectionality” “absent referent” “cyber-balkanization” “utilitarianism” and many others. This raises two questions. First, are advocates making a mistake when they use words that may be unfamiliar to the general public? Second, are ARZone members themselves comfortable discussing topics using this kind of specialised language?

Another topic raised in Lynne’s podcast concerns Dead Zones. Dead Zones are areas of the world’s oceans that no longer support any life forms at all. Animal rights advocates and vegans spend lots of time talking about dairy cows and their calves, or about dogs, cats and chimpanzees who are killed in medical labs. Are ARZone members aware of the problems facing the world’s oceans and do you see this topic as one ARZone ought to spend more time focusing on?

The third topic of interest from Lynne’s podcast is our human relationship with those other animals we live with as “pets.” Many people outside of the animal movement think that animal rights advocates want to take their “pets” away. What do you think, does being vegan mean that we can’t or shouldn’t live with other animals? What about those other animals we might rescue from shelters and such? By living with them, are we inadvertently sending the message to the general public that owning other animals is OK?

The final topic we’d like to discuss is the question of whether humans are rational or emotional beings. There is considerable support for the idea that when many, perhaps most, people are confronted with an argument that challenges their beliefs, rather than change their beliefs and behaviours based on those beliefs, they engage instead in various sorts of mental gymnastics in order to effectively ignore that argument. For that reason, do you think there is a question about whether a moral argument for veganism will generally be the most effective way to change the minds of others?

Please join us this weekend and share your thoughts about these topics as well as whatever else may be on your mind relating to them.

All members are encouraged to participate in this workshop, as well as to suggest topics for and participate in future forums in ARZone.

Animal Rights Zone (ARZone) exists to help educate vegans and non-vegans alike about the obligations human beings have toward all other animals.
