All commercial use of animals must inevitably involve cruelty. Keeping hens as "free range" may not be as cruel as keeping them in cramped cages, but can we even trust descriptions of "Free Range"? There are more than 3 million free range eggs bought in Britain every day, so there must also be more than 3 million free range hens here also - so why do we rarely see free range hens when we visit the countryside? This short video may give us some indication of the reason.
Note that even genuine "free range" still involves killing all the unwanted male chicks soon after birth and killing the females when they become too old to produce regular eggs.
