Fighting for animal liberation and an end to speciesism
I have to admit that I don't generally visit the zoo because I am left quite depressed by the time I have finished walking around.
The most compelling argument in favour of zoos is about the breeding of endangered animals, but they don't as far as I am aware end up being released back into the wild. Being born in captivity would also deny them the experiences they require to learn how to survive, so the argument becomes somewhat irrelevant if all we are doing is keeping endangered animals alive for human entertainment.
I'm not surprised really that they are not given greater attention. It pretty much sums up what humans think of animals.
