Fighting for animal liberation and an end to speciesism
I am curious what people's thoughts are on this topic.

Bostrom (and other philosophers) states that cosmologists have determined that the universe is infinite and there is thus an infinite amount of utility or well-being. You can affect only finite quantities. So it is not possible to change the total amount of well-being in the universe. Thus, he argues, this poses a problem for any ethical theory that evaluates aggregated consequences (i.e., tries to maximize well-being). For example, "If pleasure and pain are already infinite, then all possible actions you could take would be morally on a par according to this criterion, for none of them would make any difference to the total amount of pleasure or pain." Obviously this issue is not a problem for non-consequentialist perspectives. I've been giving this argument a lot of thought and am curious what others think.
