this does happen. I found out about it via a petition (this focussed on China and called for a boycott of the country). I did some research and got in touch with some individuals and organisations in China and South Korea including Hong Kong Animal Speak and KARA. I have articles about the dish entitled 'live boiled cat' which is on sale in some restaurants in China. You've probably seen the PETA film of the racoon dog being skinned alive.
