Whitenife is a tasteful social venture, headquartered in India, that helps to enforce the ban on the ivory trade and provide ethical employment to several artisan communities.
Sonia Agarwal, Whitenife's founder, launched the firm in February this year (2013), to create artefacts and jewellery using Elfh, a patent registered, mineral-based composite that is 89% close to genuine elephant ivory. Back in high school, Sonia's idea was to create a patent leather replacement product, and interned with firms researching leather alternatives. It's here that she stumbled on the potential of Elfh.

The 23-year-old says "Unlike plastic that can only be cast, Elfh can be carved and crafted just like ivory." This means she has made luxury fashion meet social consciousness, preventing the poaching of elephants for their tusks and keeping the tradition of bone carvers.
"We must look at fashion in broader terms. It's not just about wearing good clothes and accessories. It's about how you think, lead your life," she says.
