Fighting for animal liberation and an end to speciesism
This documentary takes a piercing investigative look at the economic, political and ecological implications of the worldwide disappearance of the honeybee. One of nature’s most complex and finely tuned organisms.
The film examines our current agricultural landscape and celebrates the ancient and sacred connection between man and the honeybee. The story highlights the positive changes that have resulted due to the tragic phenomenon known as "Colony Collapse Disorder." To empower the audience, the documentary provides viewers with tangible solutions they can apply to their everyday lives.
Vanishing of the Bees unfolds as a dramatic tale of science and mystery, illuminating this extraordinary crisis and its greater meaning about the relationship between humankind and Mother Earth. The bees have a message - but will we listen?

I'd like to know what the practical animal rights solution to the issues raised in this documentary are. Vegans obviously need pollinators to survive (whether we need Pollan is another matter). Given the widespread practice of monoculture, a transition away from directly using bees - to simply relying on them to live - and toward veganic polyculture would involve many generations. Do we let welfarists worry about it and only see, hear, and speak veganism?
We had a conversation with the filmmaker (before the film's release) about doing PR. Once she found out we were vegans and animal activists, and wouldn't support the "happy beekeeping" message, the conversation ended. I have not seen the film so I can't really judge the content. I hope to see it someday.
