Interesting. I'd have thought that cruelty would have been worse in older times but it seems the other way round here. I'm not sure if it's just my imagination, but it seems that the types of cruelty towards animals are getting worse here in Australia. It's my understanding that the Prophet Mohammad loved cats, and that's one reason why cats are, or perhaps were, tolerated in Istanbul.
